Question about 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Keeps overheating It is fine when I am driving over 40 but if I am in traffic or idling it starts to overheat fast. I do not even have the ac on and it still overheats.

    Okay I cheked these

    clogged radiator,

    insufficient coolant level (radiator and reservoir);

    too soft radiator hoses;

    defective/leaky water pump (impeller);

    water pump belt/tensioner;

    and I changed the Fan Fuse. How do I check


    radiator fan and fan relay?

    Most normal causes for overheating would be:


    • clogged radiator,

    • insufficient coolant level (radiator and reservoir);

    • too soft radiator hoses;

    • defective/leaky water pump (impeller);

    • water pump belt/tensioner;

    • radiator fan;

    • fan relay;

    • fan fuse.
    In some instances, the fan works in conjunction with the A/C and/or heater and therefore would only work if those two are enabled.

    Should your particular vehicle be using a radiator fan with clutch, that could also cause the fan blades not to spin even if the fan motor is turning.

    Pls check the above mentioned components.

    Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

    Appreciate the postback and your understanding.

    As earlier posted, almost all versions require the A/C to be turned
    on
    for the radiator fan to work. When you are driving over 40, the
    airflow is enough to cool the engine but not when stationary
    .

    The radiator fan would have two (2) wires; you could remove the connector and wire the fan directly to the battery to test if it will turn.

    Additionally, you could test for the presence of B+12VDC with the use of a voltmeter on the fan motor itself/connector.

    To my knowledge, there are two fan relays on most versions. The 1st fan relay is in the relay block in the same box with the fuses (least likely). The 2nd is below the front passenger headlight (most likely). It is a bit of work to access it. You could try removing most of the whole front end which includes the bumper. Alternately, you could remove the right headlight assembly plus the plastic cover some just cut a hole to gain access. Thereafter, you need to remove the 2 screws holding the relay in place.

    In some instances, it could be the grounding wire of either the relay or the fan itself that is corroded and would require cleaning/scrapping.

I have a 2000 vwb with a 2.0 engine, it keeps overheating. I have replaced the radiator flange and it overheated and melted that. Anyone know if there is a fan delay or relay switch?

2000 sebring. Overheats with air conditioning on.


I just had my coolant flushed and my radiator cooling fan replaced. The car was slightly overheating and would "gargle" in the coolant bowl after I turned the engine off. It turned out to be the radiator was clogged up on one side.

I went full tilt and replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, radiator cap and timing belt. I have 85,000 miles on the car and it was about time to do these things anyway. It is running like a new car now.
