Question about 2003 Jeep Liberty

1 Answer

Hi, I have a 2003 liberty sport. When I put it in 4 wheel there is a loud grinding noise. Is it safe to drive it with the 4 wheel off to go get it serviced? What does this mean in terms of cost?

If it dosen't gring in 2wd, then it's isolated in the 4wd part of the system. In terms of cost, there isn't any way to estimate as it could be one or several parts involved.

2003 ford escape has a loud humming while driving

Does it get louder as you go faster? This could be a bad wheel bearing. Go for a drive on a safe street or road with no traffic. Drive at 40 mph and now put the vehicle in neutral and shut the engine off. If you still have this noise it is probably a wheel bearing. Try to determine which corner the noise is loudest to find which wheel bearing is making the most noise. You may need to lift all 4 wheels off the ground and test to find the noise. Be careful and use jack stands. I hope this helps. Rod

It's a good chance that it's either wheel bearings or the CV joints.

Best way to shift from 2 hi into 4 hi or low is to have the vehicle completely stopped, in neutral, and then move the shifter lever. Any other way can damage your transfercase, which sounds like thats what you did. Trans shop.
