Can only mean that the car has a blown head gasket or two being a Subaru or possible cracks in the heads. The car must have overheated before you put the new radiator in. It is very hard to remove the heads with the engine in the car , easier to do the job with the engine out. The gaskets for subarus are quite expensive. Make sure you have the heads surfaced and pressure checked before reassembly. Sorry about the bad news If this helps Please Vote Jeff

I replaced my radiator on my 03 lincoln navigator and now there is trans mission oil in my coolant my check engine light is on and the code is p0174 can someone tell me what can be the problem??

code p0174 refers to system too lean bank 2===causes intake/exhaust leak---fuel pressure /pump---injector/s---AIR system---hose connection/s
the transmission oil in the coolant will be from a failed transmission cooler in the radiator tank ( perils of fitting anything but brand new out of the box radiators.)
you have to completely flush out the cooling system as the oil in the system will affect the ability of the coolant to cool the engine
It is also possible that there will be coolant in the transmission as when the pump pressure is lost from stopping the engine ,the radiator pressure will force water back into the transmission.

Just put a new radiator in and it ran hot a day later. Should i bleed the system and how?

If the cooling system has air in it, yes you have to bleed it. If there is no small fitting on top of the engine to allow air to escape, you have to run the engine with the radiator cap or filler tank cap loose until the thermostat opens, then add more coolant.
I wonder about air in the system if it did not run hot right after you installed the radiator. Is it possible you are leaking coolant somewhere, or burning it out the exhaust ?

Not much room to work there, eh? On GM cars, there's a procedure called "rotating the engine forward". It tethers the engine in a forward-leaning position so you can work on the backside, gives you a few inches more to reach back there.
On the radiator support is one or two "dog-bone" braces that attach to top of engine. Remove the long bolt from both braces (15mm wrench or socket on the bolt and nut). On one of the dog-bones is a hole on the underside, see it? You have to lever or pry the engine forward, and fit the long bolt you removed back into that same slot, but with the hole in the dog-bone there where the bolt goes through the hole when it is re-inserted. This pulls the top of engine over towards the radiator by 2 or 3 inches. That's all you get to work on the backside, but it usually suffices. Remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifolds, and the bolts or nuts for the exhaust manifold, any other obstructions (the O2 sensor connector, for one), and pull the manifold off. Clean gasket surfaces, place new gasket, and re-install.

I have a 1998 subaru impreza rs 2.5. I have new radiator and thermostat. Car runs great but no heat and when I drive it the temp gauge reads hot. I pull over and shut off then open the bleeder valve and...

The symptom you describe, assuming there are no external coolant leaks, indicate a high possibility of a failing cylinder head gasket.

I suggest you ask your local repairer to carry out a block test that uses a chemical that changes colour when it comes into contact with combustion gas.

Van is overheating

most likley you need to replace the thermostat. but check to make sure your fan is comming on to cool the motor down first check all fuses. under dash and under the hood.

    Place a catch pan under the drain valve of your Venture radiator.

    Open the radiator valve and drain at least 2 quarts of coolant. Then close the drain valve.

    Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly from the top of the engine to gain access to thev thermostat housing. Use a screwdriver and a ratchet and socket if necessary.

    Disconnect the crossover exhaust pipe using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

    Follow the upper radiator hose towards the engine to locate the thermostat housing.

  • 6

    Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing. Use a pair of rib joint pliers to loosen the clamp, and then slip it off the thermostat housing towards the radiator. Other Venture models may use a worm clamp type, which you can remove using a standard screwdriver or ratchet and socket.

    Remove the upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing by carefully twisting and pulling the hose off the fitting.

    Unscrew the two mounting bolts from the thermostat housing using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket. Detach the thermostat housing from the engine.

    Note the exact position of the thermostat so that you install the new one the same way. Then remove the thermostat and gasket.

    Apply a light coat of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealer to the threads of the thermostat housing bolts.

    Set the new thermostat and new gasket in place.

    Set the thermostat housing in place and start the two mounting bolts by hand. Then tighten the bolts using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

    Connect the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing.

    Tighten the upper radiator clamp over the thermostat housing using the rib joint pliers, standard screwdriver or ratchet and socket.

    Connect the crossover exhaust pipe using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.

    Install the air cleaner and duct assembly using the screwdriver or ratchet and socket.

    Add coolant to the radiator using a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and anti-freeze.

    Start the engine and check the upper radiator hose and thermostat housing for leaks

    the thermostant is behind the exhaust crossover pipe, this is the pipe that connects the front exhaust manifold to the rear, the housing is behind that, its a tight fit,also if you follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to engine the housing that the hose goes to is where the thermostant goes,heres a diagram, hope this helps,

    How to change the thermostat

    Alero, Grand Am 1999-2005 Thermostat - Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine
    1. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, remove the exhaust manifold, as outlined in this section.
    2. Drain the cooling system.
    3. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolts.
    4. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.

    5. Remove the thermostat.

    To install:
    1. Install the thermostat.
    2. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
    3. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt. Tighten the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    4. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, install the exhaust manifold, as outlined in this section.
    5. Fill the cooling system.

    3.1L Engines
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2. Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat housing.
    3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
    4. Disconnect the surge tank line from the thermostat housing.
    5. Remove thermostat housing-to-intake manifold attaching bolt and nut, then remove the housing.
    6. Remove the thermostat.

    To install:
    1. Clean all gasket surfaces completely.
    2. Insert the thermostat in the intake manifold.
    3. Attach the thermostat housing to the intake manifold.
    4. Install the mounting bolt and nut. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    5. Install the air cleaner assembly.
    6. Connect the surge tank line to thermostat housing.
    7. Refill the cooling system.
    8. Connect the negative battery cable, remove the radiator cap, then start the engine. Allow the engine to run with radiator cap removed, until the upper radiator hose becomes hot (thermostat open). With the engine idling, add coolant to the radiator until the level is up to the bottom of the filler neck.
    9. Install the radiator cap, making sure the arrows line up with the overflow tube.

    3.4L Engine
    1. Drain the cooling system.
    2. Remove the air cleaner.
    3. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
    4. Disconnect the surge tank line fitting from the coolant outlet.
    5. Remove the thermostat housing to intake manifold bolts.
    6. Remove the thermostat housing outlet and thermostat
    7. Clean the mating surfaces.

    To install:
    1. Install the thermostat and housing outlet.
    2. Install the thermostat housing bolts. Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    3. Install exhaust crossover pipe.
    4. Connect the surge tank line fitting to the coolant outlet. Tighten the fittings to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    5. Install the air cleaner.
    6. Fill the cooling system.
    7. Inspect the system for leaks.

    unless seriously can have your radiator rodded and cored...usually carrying a better or equal warranty to new and costing much a good radiator shop in your area
