The bolt holding brake caliper has a rounded head making it impossible to get off . any idea's ?

Vice grips if not cut and drill which is unconfortable and may require a vice on a bench and removal of caliper bracket.

  1. Remove the tire.
  2. There are 2 bolts holding the caliper in place, and they are on the back side of the caliper. Remove both bolts, and remove caliper. It may be tough to remove, but essentially it slides off. Use a flat head screw drive if you have to wedge it.
  3. Remove the old brake pads.
  4. Compress the caliper piston in with a piston compressor, or c-clamp.
  5. Install new brake pads.
  6. Install caliper and caliper bolts.
  7. Install tire and pump brakes until firm.

this is pretty simple but you will need some specialty tools which you can borrow from auto-zone of course remove the wheels behind the caliper assembly you will find a set of 4 bolts or screws one set holds only the caliper in place and the other holds the bracket for the calipers. you will have to see if the bolts for the caliper are a inverted torx(looks like a star)or a inverted square head or a regular standadr bolt once you find this out remove the two bolts pull up and out on the caliper the pads may stay in place or they may come out with the caliper. you will need a c-clamp so that you will be able to push the cylinder back in make sure you grease or lubricate all contact points with high temperature lithium grease reverse the process to reinstall before driving the car make sure you pump the brakes a couple of times in order to seat the new brakes and make sure the brakes are not pressed while the calipers are off of the car because this will push the cylinders completley out.

Make sure the emergency brake isn't on, the 2 bolts that hold the caliper itself are long with only threads near the top, the other 2 bolts hold the thing on the hub to stop the caliper from going around with the brakes. You should only be taking off the caliper bolts, the caliper slides back and forth on these when you hit the brakes. Pull the bolts and the caliper and pads should pop right out, with the squealers and shims. Hope this helps.

How to install front brake rotors for 2004 odyssy?


1. remove 2 bolts holding caliper on (either 12 or 14 mm)
2 remove 2 bolts holding caliper bracket (which holds the brake pads) (17mm)
3. remove the 2 phillips head bolt holding the rotor on
4 remove rotor, if rusted may need to tap it off
5 reverse procedure, when reinstalling caliper, may need to press piston back into caliper to get it to fit over new rotor

Rotors on 1999 saturn sl 2 are bad and i want to replace them


loosen the lugs. lift the car and support it safely. take the tires off the front of the car. through the caliper is an allen head bolt. the head of the bolt faces inside the wheel well. you will have to put your head inside the wheel well to see where to put the allen wrench. the size of the allen wrench should be 3/8. loosen the bolt and slide the caliper and brakes off of the rotor. Support the caliper with wire or string. do not let the caliper hang by the soft rubber brake hose. the caliper is the only thing that holds the rotor in place. the rotor should now slide right off the lugnuts. Check the brake pads they need to be replaced also. If the pads spent any kind of time against bad rotors they are garbage.When it is time to put the new brake pads on the saturn open the master cylinder so the brake fluid can return to the reservoir when you compress the calipers back to their resting position. In order to compress the calipers you will probably need a large C clamp. Reassemble the brakes. Remember to check the level of brake fluid and close the master cylinder. Before driving the car be sure to pump the brakes to assure you have proper feel and to make sure everything is in order.

How do you get the hub off?


hi from uk to remove rotors/ discs as in uk remove wheel then remove the sprung clip that holds caliper to mounting remember how fitted ! then remove the 2 x bolts securing caliper to the carrier these are at rear of caliper then remove caliper carefully as not to put undue strain on hose ? the rotors/discs are simply secured to the hub assy with 2x countersunk crossheaded bolts/screwed into hub then you may need to tap disc/rotor firmly from b/hind to remove off hub ? reassembly is reverse proceedure just one bit of advice ! these contersunk bolts can round off the x/head but if you use a good driver and hitimpact the driver in bolt it usually frees em or if you have impact driver ? no problem ! if the bolts fail to come out? do not worry ! just drill off the head of bolt and remove disc/rotor these bolts are onle fitted to keep the wheel bolt holes in line with rotor when wheel is removed so play no part in braking !hope this explains clear to you remember !new rotors new pads! not old ones and make sure you bleed the both brake calipers to rid of old fluid from calipers this will make a dfference to your brake feel and operation/travel of pedal good luck

Can not get rear break caliper off on 2001 Tahoe. Mounting bolts will not come out of caliper to caliper will not slide off.


If the mounting bolts will not come off,buy a complete rebuilt caliper with mounting bracket and hardware. Check that the hardware contains new mounting bolts.
Cut bolts off with a high speed metal cutting disk and remove caliper.
When installing new caliper always use thread lock on all mounting bolts.
Bleed system with new fresh brake fluid and you are done!

Issues replacing front rotors


The brakets can be removed by removing two (2) fairly large hex head bolts on the back side of the wheel assembly. Apply a small amount of WD-40, but do not get any on the other brake parts. Using an extension pipe on the handle of a 3/8 inch rachet you should get enough leverage to break the bolts free. Make CERTAIN you are using a snug fitting socket to avoid rounding the hex head bolts, or you job will get twice as difficult. If all else fails you can spot apply some heat to the bolt head, and then try loosening the bolt again. Avoid heating up any grease areas or rubber parts. I generally use a pipe extension that is about 12 inches in length, as opposed to just the short rachet handle.

Assuming that this Model has 4 Wheel Disk Brakes I will lead you the Best that I can. Remove the Tire, From there you will see a Large Disk with a "Caliper" Mounted on the top side that covers Both sides of the Disk. On the Back side of this "Caliper" on the Top and Bottom of it There is going to be a Bolt on the Top and Bottom. Some use Allen Wrenches and Some use Bolts or Nuts, Feel around and figure out which one you have. Remove these and Lift the Caliper Off of the Disk,BE CAREFUL WITH THE BRAKE LINE ATTACHED TO THE CALIPER AND DO NOT REMOVE THE BRAKE LINE! Remove the Brake Pads from the Caliper at this Point. On the Back of the Brake Pads that you just removed there should be Clips, Take these off the Old pads ans Install on the New Pads. Right where the Pads were on the Caliper there is going to be a Round Cylinder with a Large Hole in the Center, This needs to be Depressed back into the Caliper to get this Job done. On the Top of the Caliper there is a Small Bolt that is Round on Top and has a Small Hole in the Center Just like a Persons Head on a Nut. You MUST do the Next Steps Together to make this work CORRECTLY! Get a Wrench that fits the Small nut on top and Loosen it VERY LITTLE While you use a Pair of Channel Locks to Compress the Cylinder Back into the Caliper. You should see Brake Fluid come out of the Head in that little Nut. Once the Cylinder is Compressed Back into the Caliper Tighten the Little Nut Back down. Try not to let Air get Back into the Hole in the Nut that you are Loosening Or We will have a PROBLEM. So, Make sure you do BOTH of them at the Same time (Loosen nut WHILE Compressing Cylinder with Channel Locks). Install the New Brake Pads on the Caliper the Same way that they came off. Wipe everything off and keep it all Clean! Install the Caliper Back on the Disk and Replace the Bolts on Top and Bottom of Caliper. Get in the Car and Pump the Brake Pedal until it gets Firm and go to the Next one! This will work for all if you have 4 Wheel Disk Brakes. If you get two much air in the Lines the Brakes will go to the Floor and you will have to have a Helper Pump the Brakes while you Loosen the Little Nut on top of the Caliper.
