Why wheel nuts should be torqued .


The wheel nuts hold the brake rotor to the hub.
If the rotor is distorted because the wheel nuts are too tight,the error is amplified because the rotor is much bigger around the outside edge where the brake pads are.
When the brakes get hot,the metal expands and further worsens the problem.
Overtightening the nuts especially on an uneven basis,can warp rotors very easily,or damage the aluminum wheels as well as the hub and bearings.
There are special torque sticks made for the 65 to 80 lb.ft.rating of most of the popular japanese cars.
There are also higher value bars for larger vehicles.
Most one ton diesel trucks are in the 145 to 165 lb.ft range.
Wheel nuts are tightened in a specific pattern as well,depending if they are 4,5 ,6,or 8 bolt design.
Most impact guns are 250 to 400 lb.ft of torque.Some are more than that.
Alot of technicians think that they are so good that they can torque the wheel nuts by "feel",without using a torque device or torque wrench.
The only reason they do not use torque sticks is to save some time.
In the long run they lose money though.
For the 30 seconds it takes per wheel,the incidence of doing free warranty work from warped rotors is reduced drastically.
Manufacturers have the torque specs for very good reasons.
Ask the shop that works on your car or truck if they use torque sticks,bars,or a torque wrench on the wheels.
If they do not,look for a different shop that does not take short cuts.

2 wheel drive should be between 12-15 ft-lbs
4 wheel drive would be between 130-135 ft-lbs

Procedure for replacing rear whl brgs on a 2003 escape awd


4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Rear wheel
    • Rear brake shoes
    • Rear halfshaft nut and loosen the halfshaft from the hub
    • Wheel hub and place it in a vise
    • Inner wheel bearing race from the hub
    • Antilock Brake System (ABS) sensor bracket and move the sensor aside, if equipped
    • Parking brake cable from the steering knuckle
    • Brake line from the wheel cylinder and support the knuckle
    • Lower shock absorber nut
    • Lower ball joint by holding the ball joint stud
    • Upper ball joint
    • Coil spring while noting the location of the insulator
    • Steering knuckle cam
    • Steering knuckle
    • Snapring and press out the outer wheel bearing race from the knuckle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    • New wheel bearing into the steering knuckle
    • Snapring to the knuckle
    • Wheel hub
    • Steering knuckle cam and hand tighten the bolt
    • Coil spring
    • Shock absorber lower nut. Torque the nut to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm) for 2002-04 models; 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
    • Upper ball joint. Torque the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
    • Lower ball joint. Torque the nut to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm). Align the steering knuckle cam and torque the bolt to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
    • Brake line to the wheel cylinder. Torque the brake line bracket bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and the brake line fastener to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
    • Parking brake cable to the backing plate. Torque the bolt to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    • ABS sensor bracket. Torque the bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm), if equipped
    • Halfshaft nut. Torque the nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
    • Brake shoes
    • Rear wheel
    • Negative battery cable
  2. Fill and bleed the brake system.
  3. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as needed.

2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Rear wheel
    • Rear brake drum
    • Wheel hub nut
    • Wheel hub
    • Inner wheel bearing race from the hub
    • Snapring
    • Wheel bearing outer race from the knuckle

What is the torque for the rear wheel bearing nuts on 1991 vw jetta diesel


Temporarly torque the axle nut to 87 in.lb., while turning the brake drum by hand. Then loosen the nut slightly. Tighten the axle nut again, slowly and in small increments while turning the wheel, until the thrust washer can just barely be moved back and forth with a light push from the tip of a screwdriver.

Yes, it is very important that you torque the wheels on your car. The correct torque for your model is 80 ft-pds. After driving 50 miles you need to re- torque to 80 ft-pds . That is because the lugs can loosen . This is especially true with aluminum rims. The reason you carefully torque the wheels is so your brake discs/rotors do not warp when they get hot and of course so the wheels do not fall off. Do not over tighten your wheels, this will warp the discs/rotors. Torque your wheels and then after fifty moles re-torque the wheels.

Replacing front wheel barings on a 2005 chev silverado. need torque specs for 3 mounting bolts and torque spec for shaft nut through center of bearing (spline gear)


the big one tighten with a big bar and pull it to about 120lbs ,the three smaller ones which i cannot place at the moment but if they are 17mm size heads then about 60 but i always feel them as i do them and never use a torque wrench or a air wrench ,just muscle and 40yrs of feel
