Does the word security stays flashing after you crank the engine? if it does vehicle has a problem with the passlock 2 system which is a factory installed anti-theft system. when faulty which is too common on those year GM models, vehicle will start and run for 2 or 3 seconds and die out. follow this procedure: 1) locate yellow 20ga. wire running out of steering column which will run along with heavier gauge wires. correct wire will be thin compared to the main ignition wires. 2) cut wire and connect an in line toggle switch and leave in on position. 3) put key in ignition and move forward and leave it that way for approximate 15 min. or until security light goes out. 4) as soon as light goes out vehicle should start. if it does not crank engine again until it starts. 5). when engine starts flip toggle switch to the off position then security light will come on. done. passlock system is bypassed. security light will stay on constant but vehicle will no longer leave you stranded.

Jesseg1968 is right on. I had the same symptoms with a 1998 Jimmy s-10 and followed his directions and installed the switch and starting up routine once and it started right up first on the first try. Worked great except the security light did not stay on which I do not care about as long as it starts. It has been ok for about a week now and prior to that I had the starting problem at least every 3rd or 4th time that I tried to start it up. Not sure which way the on/off switch was supposed to go though so I believe that I put it so that the "on" was switched going away from the ignition switch to the engine compartment. It is important that you pick the thinnest of the yellow wires. I had three of them one real big and two small thin ones that were almost the same size and it was hard to tell which one was the thinnest so I followed the thinnest yellow one to the ignition switch. I must have picked the right one. Many thanks Jesseg1968.Just a comment on Jerry8807, with the security light issue being the problem, it is my understanding that the fuel flow is interrupted and that is why the engine will just start for a couple seconds and then stall out unless you turn the ignition switch on for about 11 minutes and hopefully your security light will go out and then you can start the engine and it will keep running. At the very end of my experience before I installed the "magic" switch I could not get the security light to go out at all after waiting the 11 minute intervals three times. It took the fourth try before the security light went out and I could then start it and it would keep running. Thanks again!

Several things come into play here ! Do you have fuel pressure , do you have spark and do you have injector pulse ! This is the time of year i see this question a lot ! Start with the fuel - can you hear the fuel pump run with just the key turned on if yes you will need a fuel pressure gauge to get the pressure reading. , second - spark - pull a plug out and insert it back into the plug/coil wire and make sure the plug is against a metal ground and turn the engine over and obsevre to see if there is spark ? Injector pulse can only be checked with a noide light wich can be purchased at your local parts place - unplug one of the injectors and plug in the noide light and turn engine over - it should flicker on and off ! Thense are the basics and if any fail they will need expert diagnosis with more equipment - also check to see if you have any c

SOURCE: 2000 gmc jimmy wont start

I also had this problem with mine. There's a main power cable that runs to the battery. The bolt was completely corroded, so there was no connection = no power to start the truck. Check that, it'll cost ya less than 5 bucks to fix.

the fuel pressure if leaking could cause this the regulator is located under the intake plenum but you should smell gas .if you dont then most likely the pump is bad ,the pump will come on for 2 seconds when the key is on then go off it will not stay on with just the key on only when you crank it will it .so have your fuel pressure checked with a gauge.
