I have the same problem on an A3 1.9TDI 2003. The release button appears to have lost its positive feel. I took the rear ashtray out & poked about with a torch but couldn't find any way to release the arm rest to dismantle it. (What is the adjuster allen bolt on the alloy forked thing above the handbrake cable adjuster?) I prised the end caps off the swivel pin & couldn't seeany way to prise the retaining spring washers off the ends to slide the pivot pin out. Gave up.

My 2002 A3 just did the same thing - feels like a spring has gone in the release. It's now jammed in the full-upright position...

any fixes known? or another visit to a pricey Audi workshop? =(

    Hi

I have an Audi A3 1.9 TDI and the exact same problem with the arm rest, which makes for long disance travelling a pain in the neck.

I recently had it serviced, the mechanic rang an Audi dealer to ask about the arm rest problem and was told its a very common complaint, they cost approx £400 for a replacement, so he has fixed the problem by putting in 6 screws to keep it upright..

Take out your MAF sensor, positioned on main air intake pipe to throttle and clean it with Carberetor Cleaning spray and away you go. this is the first thing to check and normally very common.
