Question about 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage

Clutch has just started engaging close to floor, and pedal has gone soft, hard to place in gear when idling.

It probably has hydraulic clutch cylinder, meaning it is low on fluid, they use brake fluid for this. Look under the hood on the drivers side firewall close to the master cylinder.

The clutch is not adjustable it is fully hydraulic. That means it is self adjusting, if the clutch pedal engages high on the pedal and the clutch is hard to push you need a new clutch plate and pressure plate.

Without more information it's going to be hard to answer the question. What exactly is the clutch pedal doing? Is it going straight to the floor and NOT coming back up? Is it going to the floor and coming back up but NOT letting the vehicle go into gear?

My clutch pedal goes all the way to the floor . Could this cause decrease in power


A clutch pedal normally does go all the way to the floor. If you can shift gear without a crunch, it is disengaging OK.

The loss of power could mean the clutch plate is worn and is slipping when engaged. There is a crude test for this. Start the engine and idle it. Apply the footbrake firmly, depress the clutch and put the gearbox in 3rd. Let the clutch out slowly. If the engine does not immediately stall, the clutch needs replacing.

Clutch pedal travel


Your pedal height may be adjustable by a stopper bolt at top of pedal. You would have to check the specification for your car. Most important that the pedal has about a half inch free travel before clutch begins to engage. You need that free play to ensure the release bearing (the throw-out bearing) is not touching the fingers on the pressure plate when not engaged. If it always is touching, it will be rolling around constantly and will go out prematurely.
Your new clutch will allow gear engagement sooner as the clutch pedal is released. I mean gears will engage just as pedal is lifting off from floor. You should notice that difference-the old clutch would have taken longer pedal travel from floor before releasing.

You have a leak and will need to replace the clutch master and slave cylinders.

You said it the slave cylinder was leaking to replace it how can i tell if its bad if its not leaking


usually when you have a bad clutch slave cylinder you know it right away because since it is a hydraulic part, once a seal inside the slave cylinder gets bad, it will start leaking fluid, at the same time, because the seal is not sealing properly, it will allow air inside the system causing your clutch pedal to feel soft and spongy.
When a clutch pedal feels that way, its an indication of air in the system and when this happens it makes it hard to operate the clutch properly because it engages even with your foot almost all the way to the floor. at times you may not even be able to place your car or truck in gear due to this problem.
A bad clutch master cylinder will have similar symptoms, make sure that you look closely at each one of these items to determine which one is the problem (the one malfunctioning will be the one leaking fluid)
One check you can do on the master cylinder is to depress the clutch pedal while someone watches the brake fluid reservoir level. if the level rises while the clutch pedal is being depressed than the clutch master cylinder is bad and should be rebuilt or replaced.

whilst it works leave well alone ,when its slipping thats when you will need to replace the clutch,check the inhibitor switch on the clutch pedal though

this sounds like the clutch slave is goin out, this unit is on the outside of the transmission. Possibly losing pressure!! Your transmission does not use transmission fluid, but instead gear oil. Have the following checked:
1. Clutch Slave (possibly worn)-this will cause soft or hard clutch pedal feel, slipping clutch, unintended clutch release, hard gear engagement, no/insufficient clutch movement.

*2. Clutch pedal Mounting Plate (possibly cracked)-this will cause improper gear engagement, hard gear engagement, soft pedal feel, insufficient clutch movement.

*this plate is located above the clutch pedal itself, apply pressure on the pedal with one hand while inspecting the plate for fatigue cracks(use a bright flashlight). This is very common on these models. This problem will eventually get worst and most mechanics never figure this out.

Clutch pedal suddenly goes to the floor, no longer [dis]engaging the clutch


I found that having a wood stick on the clutch pedal down to the floor all night (the other end of the stick held by the seat. oh yeah !!! ) would help to ease shifting for the first hour the next morning, then it would come back stiff and hard to engage in gear.
