Question about 1997 BMW 328

1 Answer

Hello i have a bmw 328i from 12/97. the climate control unit will just shut off sometimes. sometimes it will come right back on , sometimes it takes a while, sometimes it doesnt come back on until i start the car again. it will also come on when its turned off and then go back off. sometimes it does it more often than others. the lights and the fan go off. i think sometimes the lights go off and buttons dont do anything, but the fan stays on where it was. any suggestions ?

Your blower motor resistor is the culprit. Have a look at this thread:

How to Replace the thermostat on 2008 328i BMW

Take off the fan (32mm open wrench - Craftsman at sears). Fan nut is LH thread which means righty loosey, not lefty loosey!!!!. Radiator shroud and fan come out (and go back) as one unit. Take off the belt. Thermostat is directly behind fan. Have the new one first so you know what you are looking for. It is held on by 4 10 mm bolts. Do NOT use any gasket sealer. It will gum up the engine. The thermostat has a rubber o-ring. That's all it needs.

1999 BMW 328ic Climate Control Problem

There is a fix for this on the web. You have to remove the control unit and replace a resistor or capacitor. I did mine and it worked like a charm. Takes a coupla hours. the resistor is less than a dollar.

No heat or a/c

From what your saying, it works in a sense, but very little air is blowing out. I had this issue with my '96 328i where the climate control was only running the fans at a low speed no matter what setting I put it on. The resolution to my problem was replacing the final stage unit for the climate control and now my heat and a/c work beautifully and the fan goes from low to high without problems. If you don't have climate control but the manual dials for the heat and a/c, then you may need to change the blower resistor pack. For either unit, it can be located in several places and you'll have to do some searching to find it good. If the convertible is any similar to the 4dr sedan I have, it should be located under the dash panel on the drivers side at the rear of the console. Hopefully this link may help you out.

Climate control display

hi amanda this kind of cars have very coming problem with the a/c control head wich is the swtch assembly where you turn the a/c on, i'm almost positive tahn you need a new or used digital display or head control for a/c wich is the same but people call it diferent, before you take it to an auto repair and have them charge you for guessins or trying to find the problem, get another a/c control head and have them replace it, good luck
