Question about 1991 Ford F150

1 Answer

I have a 91 F150 4x4 4.9l 5sp. The speedometer seems to function properly at low speeds (0-40mph) but the faster I travel the more inaccurate it apears to be. When I'm on the fwy my speedo reads 75mph in a 65 zone. (Note, I have stock tires 235/75-15)

Hello, I had a similar problem, there is a race? in the transfer case that has a plastic gear molded onto it and it is worn down. The guy that worked on my transmission replaced it when my speedo was jumping around and causing the transmission to shift at the wrong times. He has a hard time finding the part !!!! since it was replaced I have had no problems. hope this helps

Had oil service and tire rotation on 2006 scion xb and the speedometer reads faster than the car is traveling how do i fix the problem

IF the tires are smaller in diameter than OEM calls for, the speedo will read faster than your traveling. If you want your speedo to read properly, stick with the size tires the manufacturer calls for on THAT particular vehicle.

It is a 4x4 and I cant find the speed sensor that operates the speedometer. The speedometer sticks at 100mph at a dead stop. It also jumps around between 75 and 80 at random when I am only doing 45 mph.

On our Lincoln, the problem was the Alternator shorting and energizing the ground circuit with Positive juice. Our speedometer and odometer were both affected.

We had miles advancing and 45-50 MPH at a stop. Then inaccurate readings while the car was moving. seems to have the best price for the actual speed sensor which is located in the differential @$11.94.

Please rate my solution and I hope I was helpful.

Speedometer off

Over the years I have had many complaints of the speedometer being inaccurate, few times has it actually been the case, about 5% I would say. You can have the speeds checked for accuracy by any dealer using a known good vehicle speedometer pace car, done the test dozens of times. Normal speedo accuracy is plus or minus 3 MPH.

Speedo is not accurate and the faster you go the more inaccurate it gets. It seemed to start doing this when it got cold. The needle moves back and forth at freeway speeds. There is no noise though....

Based on the age of the vehicle I would check the speed gear on the transmission for being worn or loose. If the Speedometer actually has a cable attached to it replace the cable totally. This symptom is more a sign of a worn cable than a twisted cable.

Speedometer is about 20miles an hour off and

most certainly a speed sensor problem!
it may not be pulsing properly or the drive gear is worn etc etc.
Cheers Rob

Speedometer not functioning properly

Check output speed sensor to see if functioning correctly. If working correctly ,suspect an Instrument Panel Control Module or an ECU issue .

1994 honda prelude vtec speedometer tach problem

Possible speed sensor. I know the speed sensors are a problem with hondas. A new speed sensor is about $200 and can be easily replaced. It bolts to the top of the transmission on the firewall side. Do NOT buy an e-bay one. They are only about $30 but are junk

Have you called transmission place? Did they also install it? Ask them if they changed speedometer adapter, and mention the difference in speed.
