You may need to reset the VCT mechanism. This isn't hard to do and instructions can be found on www.teamzx2.com Just go to the Knowledge Base and then to the Service Items category. There you will find my how-to on the timing belt with the instructions on how to reset the VCT. You may also have new pending codes and you should have the computer scanned to see what they are. Another common cause of a bad idle on the ZX2 is the PCV elbows. They are very soft and can crack over time. You can get a whole new PCV line from Ford for around thirty bucks.

My timing belt has just snapped on my mitsubishi car how would i go about replacing it?

Hi there. If your timing belt snapped well the car was idled up at road speed there is a good chance it did serious damage to valves or pistons. I cant gurantee it but unfourtiantly there is no good way to tell without pulling the motor apart and checking the valves and pistons, etc. If the car was just idling when it broke, you may be all right but once again no way to be sure without tearing it down and having it checked. If you decide its worth trying to replace the belt you would want to get a shop manual such as haynes or chiltons for the procedure because this is a big job. More than likely the easiest way involves pulling the engine.

2000 nissan xterra v6 xe 2wd auto trans quit running idling .

Well, I hate to inform you of this, but all Nissan engines except the V-6 that was used in the Quest mini-van up to 2003 are interference engines- meaning that if a valve is fully open and the corresponding piston travels to Top Dead Center (TDC), they will contact forcefully resulting in a bent valve.

I have seen this many times as most people don't want to spend the $500 to have their timing belt replaced.

Fortunately for you, Nissan cylinder head castings are built pretty strong. I have pulled the cylinder heads and replaced bent valves (be sure to "lap them in" with a good valve lapping compound) and reassembled the engines with fantastic results. Most engines have broken valve guides and valves and pistons, but Nissans typically don't break these things.

This is a very involved job and should not be attempted unless you have pretty extensive experience with the internal combustion engine, so I would recommend a trusted mechanic or, ultimately, your local dealer.

Depending on labor rate, you're looking in the ball park of $1500 for this repair.

I hope this has been helpful!!

Car reving up and down on its own 3 to 4 times, then sputtering and dying?

The previous solution to check the idle air contol is in the correct area but needs some clarification.
The idle control is accomplished by two parts: Throttle position sensor ( $35 at Autozone) and idle contol valve approx $190. I replaced the throttle position sensor about a week ago and it runs perfect
to date but am a skeptic after almost two years of dealer incompetance. I researched all the sensors and failure symptoms on the internet and the throttle position sensor failure symptoms matched mine
exactly. See http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Throttle _Position_Sensor
