Question about Jeep CJ5

1 Answer

The carb. is a New Carter, single bbl. on a '76 jeep 258 cu.in. We converted the auto choke to manual. The manual is working good. When the jeep sits for a couple of days , I have to use starting fluid to start it. It WILL start, by choking it but it Grinds, Grinds and Grinds until it finally starts. Once warm, just touch the starter and it starts. FRUSTRATING!!

On a carbureted car you need to pump the gas pedal a few times before starting it when it's cold. Before attempting to start, pump it four times. If it starts, next time try three, then two. Once you find what the engine likes, stay with that. if it still won't start, with the engine off, look into the carb and watch for a squirt of fuel when you move the throttle linkage, if there is none the accelerator pump isn't working.

My 1983 jeep cj7 258 acid. won't start. It turns over but won't fire up. Wondering if leaving key on for 30 min without running might have messed up the distributer?

Could have messed up a lot. Check the coil, points, condenser, and choke pull-off if it's electric. Some auto chokes have an electric heater, check for that, too. I'd just get a new condenser and points.

I need to buy a new carburetor but i dont know what carb to order its for a 1984 ford ranger its a single cab with automatic trans and v-6 engine dose anyone know what carb i need to order ? thanks for...

The 1986 Ranger V-6 was a 2.8L 170.4 cu or 2792 cc.
The carb for this engine was a 2 BBL Model 2150, E37E-AEA (Will not cross except for re-build kits!)
The Holley remanufactured PN is 645544

Autozone lists 3 carbs... one for manual trans one for auto trans and one other:

1979 cj replased carb idles tohigh

Even with a rebuilt carb you have to make the adjustments. Check the choke adjustment and set the fast idle. If choke is to tight it will be hard to start and take a long time to idle down. The fast idle sounds like it is high also.

Most of the vacum hoses were gone or ports on carb. were plugged.Need a diagarm of were the hoses go on a 1983 Jeep CJ7 with a 258 inline six with a 2 barrel Carter carb.

Most vacuum hoses are colour coded nowaday, not sure about your one, so look carefully at the end of each hose for coloured dots or lines that should line up with the ports also

1978 CJ7 No power and back fires when accelerated.

Timing should advance when accelerated. You have the vac on the distributor hooked to manifold vacuum. It needs to be on ported vacuum. And your base timing could be higher. I would set it at ten degrees.

I have a jeep that I converted the 2 bbl carb to a single bbl carb and now can't keep it running. Starts great and quickly, idles very smooth and revs up properly for the first 2-3 minutes of running. ...

Sounds like your float height is incorrect in the carb. Hopefully it is a new carb, and not a used one you bought off of someone. Used carbs are not a good idea unless you have the knowledge to rebuild one.

Jeep cj won't idle

Assuming that the jeep has not been modified it is likely the Carter BBD Carburetor on that engine, or the sensor inputs to the carburetor.

The Carter BBD has an idling circuit that is always seeking. There is a stepper motor that keeps changing the rpm, and fuel mixture. It basically never stabilizes, and it keeps adjusting based on the feedback loop from half a dozen or so sensors.

So, if a sensor goes bad and feeds a constant signal to the carb, you get problems.

The Carter BBD is a very difficult carb to rebuild and is usually fairly dear in terms of cost.

If you can find a Jeep factory repair manual (on ebay) on the 85 cj -- it is an olive green manual about 3 inches thick and is usually not too expensive, it has troubleshooting procedures for the BBD. Don't get a Haines or aftermarket manual. get the olive drab official factory manual

Remember it is probably the carb that is bad, but there may be more to it than just that.. I don't remember all the inputs to the stepper motor circuit, but I do know that EGR valve is one of them.

good luck
