Question about 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara

1 Answer

The check engine light came on for my 2002 suzuki vitara. The diagnostic code showed PO420 CAT below efficiency. The vehicle is 82,000 miles. How much does it cost for parts and labor? Thanks

420 is O2 sensor, this can happen from putting the wrong replacement sparkplugs in or just age of vehicle this just happened to my suzuki vitara so i replaced the plugs ($18) and the code hasnt come up again yet. if it does come up again ill do the sensor ($180). prices indicated are do it yourself prices

Suzuki Grand Vitara 2007 - Efficiency low on bank 1 engine light. is it just the sensor or do i need a new cat? is this common?

Is the code P420 ? Is there an exhaust leak in front of cat? If not you need a new cat. Recommend one from Suzuki. cheap ones don't last more than a year or so. If it was a sensor you would have a different code. Can only be bad cat or exhaust leak before cat allowing fresh air to be pulled in.

PO420 code-service engine light is on

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) first thing to do is go back to basics do a tune up (plugs) check the plug wires spray them with water or windex if you get a miss change them, run some fuel injector cleaner through it, don't just throw parts on it ,that is'nt cheap

Code PO420 catalyst system efficiency below threshold

you may have a bad converter, its not cleaning the exhaust, but on the other hand a bad rear o2 sensor can also cause this problem, there is a wat to test but you would need a scan tool or scope, replace the other sensor, if light returns then replace the converter, no money lost, if you were to replace the converter the o2 sensors should also be replaced. you have 165000 miles it would be crazy not to replace sensor and install new cat, so basically your just doing it in 2 steps and may get lucky and not need a cat. good luck.

You're going to have to have the codes read and find out what is setting that light on. After that problem is repaired, the car must indeed complete a drive cycle, not nessacarily 200 miles. This lets the computer run all it's tests and set all its readiness monitors. If you know what the code number is now, post it and I'll tell you the most likely cause, and repair.

Check engine light on PO420 code ? recalls

Huge problems with these cars. The Pre-cat converter is built into the exhaust manifold. Expensive to replace. No Recall on this item. Some say that inferior compounds in the catalyst cause corrosion and early wear of the piston rings. I have seen one of these use 5 qts of oil in 300 miles. Is this car using excess oil?

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.

Catalyst system efficiency below threshhold bank 2

before replacing cat converter replace o2 sensors, they go bad and give a false reading that cat efficiency is below threshold ,meaning converter is no good , i would replace o2 sensors and reset engine light and go from there, the o2 s are normaly the problem, unless you hear cat rattling, well good luck,

PO420 Catalyst System Efficiency below threshold.

Basically the mechanic will make sure don't need a tune up. or have vacuum issues or leakes in the exhaust before the cat. Then he should check the front 02 sensor to make sure its not getting lazy. If all this passes then you will need a new cat. If the O2 sensor has more than 70,000 miles on it it needs to be replaced anyways so you may just want to do this first and hope the light stays off.. The problem with a lean code is you will wear out the cat real fast if you didnt deal with this and kept driving the car. The lean code could have been vacuum leak or a bad MAF sensor or weak fuel pump.
