Yes the bands can be adjusted and should only be done by a trained transmission mechanic.

Also, if the transmission is slipping that means that there is already damage to either the clutch pack or other parts and if a band adjustment cures the problem it is only usually temporary fix.

You can buy a transmission manual and this will explain more.

If the trans fluid isn't low. Then check for a burnt smell...either way ur trans is going out. There are things u can do to prolong it's life. Change the fluid and filter. Come to a complete stop before changing from a drive gear to reverse or reverse to a drive gear. Hope this helps !

How do i adjust my front drive shaft on my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee? I'm trying to make it shorter.

The drive shafts on these Jeeps usually have a slip yoke. Usually if they are greased properly you can just slide the slipyoke back and forth.

HI, It may seem obvious, but sometimes overlooked.... have you checked the oil level, as low oil can cause some strange things to happen! My 96 4 liter would be reluctant to move sometimes, but after I topped it up, it has been fine.

Transmission slips or doesn't engage in reverse

Service the transmission, when you have the pan off, adjust the rear band. Loosen the lock nut. Tighten the adjuster to 10 ftlbs. Loosen the adjuster 2 turns and tighten the locknut. You either have an model 500 transmission (6 cylinder engine) or model 518 (V8 engine). In both transmissions reverse is controlled exactly the same. If adjusting the band doesn't fix it, then it will need rebuilt.

Life expentancy of 1996 grand jeep cherokee engine

If the engine doesnt smoke to much and if you dont have to add much oil between oil changes and you cant hear any unusal noises from the engine you should be able to run that car for many more miles. My dad has a 92 Jeep Cherokee and he over 300,000 miles on it and it still goes as long as you take care of it with regular oil changes you should have no problems

My '94 Grand Cherokee Limited has no power in reverse.

It sounds like the reverse band is out of adjustment. Three things can cause this, reverse band, front clutch and the overdrive direct clutch. To test the band, drive the truck in manual low up to 25 mph. Then let off, if the transmission doesn't pull the engine down, the band needs adjusted. If the front clutch is the problem, 3rd gear will be act weird too. The only test I know of for the overdrive direct is to inspect it, so process of elimination will have to work. Hopefully the problem is the band, because you can pull the pan, service the trans, adjust the band, and be done. Any of the other problems and you are looking at a rebuild. Good luck.
