No they don't.All your valves have a clearance between the piston and the valve. All these distances are all different for every car.Sometimes valves will tap. This tapping sound could be a lifter that's stuck or even valve lashes that have to be adjusted depending on how the tapping presents itself and the running characteristics.

If the pistons are hitting the valves .wouldn't the spark plugs be hitting also.?

Probably not, unless you have the wrong (too long reach) plugs installed. The pistons hitting the valves is usually because the timing chain or belt has broken or jumped position.

Timing belt broke 2005 hyundai tucson. New belt & tensioner& water pump Compression check shows no compression # 2 & # 6. Is it worth it to rebuild top end ?

I would say so, most probably the valves have been bent by hitting the pistons when the belt broke. When the belt breaks, the valves stop mmoving, and the pistons keep moving and will hit the valves and damage them.

I have a 2003 kia spectra 2.8 and the timing belt broke would the pistons have hit the valves

No they don't . Mine broke on my 2001 sportage and didn't do any damage. This is due to the fact that the engine is called a "non-interference" motor. At no time can the valve hit a piston (in theory) because the valve travel is not enough to ever hit the piston. :) Hope this helps, James Booth

Will the valves will connect with the piston if the timing belt broke?

I'm assuming you meant if the timing belt broke would the pistons hit your valves? 2 parts to this, #1 if your belt just broke you should be fine, #2 if your belt skipped time significantly (highly improbable) only then would your internal components have a chance of hitting each other from components trying to open and close at improper times. This could damage both intake/exhaust valves, other valve train components and even damage the head of your pistons.

On the 960 volvo if i broke atimeing belt while driveing dont the pistons come up as far as the crank will let it and the valves stop where they are at if not why dont the pistons hit the valves while its...

If the belt is turning the bottom and top end in time,no problem.Break a belt and the top end stops with the some valves open and some closed, meantime the bottom end keeps going around and around and the pistons up and down until the engine not only quits but continues until the vehicle is either put in neutral or until it comes to a stop, either way the damage is dune with-in the first seconds of the belt breaking, sorry for the news but this is true of all overhead valve engines.

When timing belt goes dose it reck valves. do they hit the piston.

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters Basically the timing belt connects the crankshaft with the two camshafts. This allows the valves to open allowing air into the engine at the right time. If the belt breaks then the crankshaft along with the piston and rod assembly will still move but the valves will be still. This can cause the piston to collide with the valves which can cause damage to the pistons, valves, and the entire head in some cases. There is a chance of nothing getting damage though. There are interference and free-wheeling engines. The difference is that free-wheeling engines has a space between the top of the piston and the bottom of the valve so if the belt did break then the valve would not hit the top of the piston

03 kia rio-24000 km.will valves hit piston if belt breaks?

yep valves will hit piston if timing belt brake.timing belt keep your valves and piston timed.when intake valves and exhaust valve open.piston is on down stroke.the timing belt keep pistons and valves from colliding.your timing belt change is due at 60000 miles.but in some cases belt need to be inspect at 30000 miles.to be on the safe side.

if the piston truely hits the valve then your car definitely need overhauling! rod bearing could have worn out. get it towed to a repair center.
