Open the rear tailgate There are 2 screws that hold light housing in place.. Remove the screws then pull the housing outwards till the clip behind it springs. You then need to knock the housing sideways (outwards) to free the 2 prongs that attach housing to the car body.
Unclip the rear housing from the back of the light unit & change the bulb.

I own a 2005 Ford Focus ZXW wagon & encountered the same problem with the lenses melting in both left & right lenses.
Yesterday, my right side tail light went out, and as I was trying to change the bulb, I was wondering why it was so hard to pull out the light assembly socket until I finally got it out, & only to realize that the hole where the light socket goes into the lens had melted by the hole. The only fix I had to to cut some of the plastic on the back side of the lens so I could release the light socket assembly to change the bulb. But as a solution, I went on Ebay & purchased (2) replacement LED light bulbs for the rear lens. They are cheap, I was able to purchase (2) LED replacement light bulbs for around $3.60. The LED light bulbs do not get as hot, and is just as bright, if not brighter than the conventional light blub. By the way, on Ebay you just search for - "LED light bulbs 3157".

Open tailgate 2 screws hold housung in. Remonve the screws pull the huosing out and change bulb. On mine the housing had melted so O called the Ford garage and they got the socket out for me. I had to buy a new socket but that was it.

The underlying problem is that all Focus wagons had a design problem where the tail light assembly is prone to overheating, leading to the socket (housing) melting so that the bulb housing is impossible to remove for simple replacement of the bulb itself. Thus replacing a $4.00 item (the bulb) requires replacing the entire tail light fixture, ranging in cost from around $60 to over $100 depending on what vendor you buy the tail light assembly and new socket from. I have replaced 3 tail light assemblies thus far, and just found that the left side is also again melted meaning that when the bulb itself stops working I will face another replacement purchase. I did some online research and found that this problem has been known and described on numerous forums for almost a decade now, and the most important fact noted is that this is not just a needless expense and frustration, it also is a safety issue. Ford needs to take responsibility for this issue -- perhaps a class action will be required?

02 Focus Wagon - Rear tail light/brake light keeps blowing bulbs. Bulb is white when removed, replacement bulb last about a week, then blows again. Any idea what the problem may be.

If a bulb blows white the gas mix in the globe is incorrect and you probably got hold of a bad batch of globes from your supplier. Try buying your bulbs from another source and see if that works out better.

Is there a trick to getting to the rear turn signal on a 2003 ford focus hatchback. I had removed the screw to the lens cover but I still cannot gain access to the turn signal bulb to replace it.

Replacing tail/brake/backup lights and turn signal bulbs (coupe)

1. Make sure the headlamp control

is in the OFF position and then

open the hatchback.

2. From inside the luggage

compartment remove the wing nut

of the rear light assembly cover.

3. Using a Phillips screw driver

remove the screw. The lamp is still

retained by a spring loaded clip.

Remove by gently pulling out the

light housing.

4. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise as far as possible and pull it

out.

5. Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.

Install in reverse order.

2006 Ford Focus. Left front signal blinks fast, no left rear signal. Mechanic said, "there's a circuit board in the back that may need replaced?" I replaced the bulb, to no avail. Fuses are fine, I'm...

Hi!!
When your turn signal indicator flashes faster than normal on either side, is telling you that you have a blown or defective bulb that needs to be replaced on that particular side.
Just replace your left rear signal light bulb. Good Day!

I am pretty sure there is a relay bad on my focus for my signals. the left turn signal flashes faster than the right. Which one do i change?

Howdy,
First look for a burned out bulb on the side that flashes faster. Look carefully. Go to the right side that flashes normal and see how many bulbs flash front side and rear. then turn to left side and look, you may find one bulb burned out.
Good Luck !!!!!!!!!!

Ford Focus ZX5 - Rear brake lights stay on when car is running and in gear

Hi, you have suffered a major electrical short here, and the car is telling you via the light signals that you need to take care of this in a garage. The original short burnt cables, which is why there is visible signs of melting, smell etc. I know it will involve a cost, but consider the value of your life if the car was to go on fire with you or your family in it? Another short will cause such a fire, get to a garage soon!
