So the belt broke and the engine has crunched the valves - OUCH

Just try the dealers to see if you can even get the parts you need - then consider a complete engine rebuild - garage, winch, workbench, testing tools ,et.c etc.

What else is worn out on a 21 year old car?

When you get figures of $2000+ appearing you might consider a change of car - unless you are a good mechanic and can get parts and help - if you are asking hewre it doesn't seem like you are.

Consider saving money by buying a more modern more fuel efficient car - you could save money in the long run.

Valve timing adj.

The question is too vague to answer. Need to know what make and model, does it have variable vale timing, are you just replacing a belt or trying to alter the stock timing for some particular rpm range.

Need to change my water pump be lt

Thats the timing belt and if your going to change it you need to change the water pump and the belt and the idler that runs on the belt if the belt broke wiith the engine running thelikly hood of having a repairable engine is only in the eyes of time is'nt like money to you as the engine hitts the vales to the pistons as the belt breaks and theirs always a vale down in thest engines as the pistons keep moving after the vales stop and the collistion bends the vales and somtimes breaks the head. the new bealt will have timing marks made onto it. turn the engine to the marks ( if the belt didn't break) sure you can turn them all to the marks and thenput the belt on and then check for compression and maybe you got lucky and only have to fix one head/ If the belts still in time lne up the marks with all the covers off and then take the belt of after depressing the tensioner I just remove it it comes out the bottom with two bolts. It can be compressed in a vise and a pin can be put in it to hold it back. loosely install it back and put the belt on lining up the marks on the belt with the ones on the cam and the crank pulley moving them as little as needed to get the belt lined up. tighten the bolts that hold the tensioner and then remove the pin ( nal , cotter pin, small bolt) then the belt will be tight and the distrubuter rotor should be pointing at the #1 plug wire. slowly turning the motor forward by hand listening far bad noises till it goes all the way around to where the marks line up again. if nothing snapped or popped you may be OK. Put it back together and start it and if it runs smooth yu did a good job should take about 6 hours. If you decide you need to pay someone to do this job they should tael you that the bent valve problem is possible and all the price estimates will not be right if a head or both have to be worked at the macine shop and then reinstalled. Both heads and machineing cost pleanty and alot of old trucks like 93 models arnt worth the cost or the repair job. les than 3000 dollars. more than 2000

Signs to look for for time to get timing belt looked at. I have just purchased a second hand Hyundai 1993 excel sprint (maual transmission) but service record doesn't show any replacement being done on...

look at mileage. the replacement of the timing belt needs to be done at 60,000 miles. you risk severe damage if this is not done. these belts costs around $300-400 to do.

Renault laguna 1.9 valve change

If the cam belt popped you may not need to pull the head.. See if all you valves come to full height when you turn the cam with a wrench. If they do, you lucked out and none are bent. Change the timing belt and rotate the crank and cam together once everything is in time, and if you can, do a compression test. That will expose any bent vales. If you have compression. recheck your timing belt settings and button it up. Good Luck, Ned

18k on my 03 Santa Fe should be ok with no timing belt change per expert media and repair shop mechanics(Massachusetts),but dealer says otherwise(my Truck manual is no help),should say to dis-spell all...

Timing belts are made of rubber(they dry rot) Most manufactures recommed replace all belts at 50K or 5years. Yours is 6 years old.Not a bad idea to replace if you are going to keep your car for some time.Broken T/belts result in bent vales 80% of the time resulting in very costly repairs.
