Question about 1992 Honda Accord

1 Answer

I bought a 92 accord LX that was sitting in a lot for 5 yrs. Towed it to my house and replaced the battery and alternator and she fired right up. Drove it for about 30 miles and parked it overnight. the next day she wouldnt start. Took it to a shop and a bolt came loose on the timing tensioner and timing jumped. So they reset timing and she drove home fine. About two hours later once the engine cooled it wouldnt start. Took it back and timing again had jumped when trying to start. Replaced the tensioner, belts, distributor and water pump. Drove it home and again let it sit and cool down and timing jumped again when trying to start. What can I check other then what ive replaced to diagnose this problem?

Dont think timing is jumping as you describe but more like the advance unit on the distributor ,advance timing and it will start but when cold zilch had this before more than once and on more than one make of vehicle ,favourite for this is the old land rover discovery with teh V8 engine ,pull vacumn pipe off the inlet manifold for the advance unit and **** on and you you will see what i mean ,**** and put tongue on end of pipe and it will lose the **** ,.

I lose compression in all four cylinders at once. Once timing is redone she runs fine until she gets cold and bam no compression and marks are off a couple teeth...

i find this very hard to beleave ,once timing is locked in by tightening the belt it cannot move ,unless the camshaft is broke behind the gearwheel at the rear of the first cap or the timing gear is loose on the cam if it doesnt have a keyway like the new engines .I would really need to have a good look myself to be able to answer it correctly

Engines starts then stops running

might be time for new battery, they only last so long, usually 5 yrs is listed and that's if it's a good one to start with..more pricey. We just had the same thing happen to us. Turned out the alternator was junk, which wouldn't hold the charge from the battery and the battery was a 6yr battery, but we got 8 yrs out of it. Ended up replacing both alternator and battery in Advanced Auto's parking lot, during snow storm in NH!! They let us use their tools to replace both right there. They have tools and they checked both, no cost.

I have a 92 honda accord LX. How do i remove and replace the alternator?

Unplug the battery
Loosen and move the power steering pump out of the way (don't disconnect the hoses to it)
Loosed the bolts on the alternator (should be a 14mm on the top bolt, then there will be another lower (hard to reach 12mm bolt) where it pivots. Then, on the lower front of the alternator, there will be two 10mm bolts visible for the alternator belt tension bracket, loosen the RIGHT one as that will release the tension on the belt. You may need to bang or pry to get the alternator to swing out even if you have all the bolts out. They like to lock in there.

91 Accord LX 2 dr 4 cyl just put new battery with 5oo cold cranking amps-NO Start! Owner said car has had perpetual problems holding a charge and starting! About 3mo ago Owner charged the old Die hard...

If you manage to get it started, check the alternator output...I'm betting it is bad. Should be making no less than 12.5 with accessories all on, 13.5 to 14 with just engine running. Bad alt can drain battery even when off depending what failed inside it. Towing with a chain is not really a good idea. the cross pin in those differentials are not very good and can fail.

Shuts down while driving

my accord did this so I thought the coil was overheating. it was the pickup under the rotor. I replaced it and never had another problem. well with it anyways.
