Question about 1984 Ford F 150

I have a1984 F 150 with all new brake parts except the proportioning valve and some of the hard lines which were in good shape. I still have poor pedal pressure and weak brakes after bleeding ,I'm lost

Your not bleeding the system,period

Your working alone or something

Pumping the pedal for no reason
or gravity bleeding,which is it

How are you performing the bleeding?

That is your only problem

The front drivers side break keeps locking. I have replaced the caliper and now when I pump it no fluid is coming out from the line.


Did air get into the master cylinder? If you can, try bleeding the master cylinder. The fact that you aren't getting any fluid out of the line suggests that the master cylinder isn't pumping fluid.

Master cylinders are (usually) on a split circuit system - that is, the front left brake is on the same line as the rear right. The front right brake is on the same circuit as the rear left.

A point to be aware of is when bleeding brakes/doing brake work and if the master cylinder runs dry, is that a seal inside the master cylinder can fail/twist over and not pressurise that particular line, even though it may pressurise the opposite brake line.

I'm in the UK. I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4 litre, which I am slowly rebuilding. Three weeks ago I fitted new front brake rotors, new front callipers and pads. I've been rebuilding cars for over 40 years now and have done countless brake overhauls.

.. and could I get a hard pedal after the job was completed? I must have bled the brakes three times a day for a week and couldn't get a brake pedal. I phoned a full time mechanic I know - he came and tried to bleed the brakes three times and couldn't get a hard pedal.

That's when you think 'The master cylinder was working before I started the job so it must be still working now'.

I fitted a brand new master cylinder and because some parts for older jeeps are hard to come by in the UK, I fitted a second hand proportioning valve. When I bled the brakes again the pedal became rock solid. Fixed.

You're probably fed up with your braking problem now ... and apparently this 'no fluid/brake pedal' is more common than you may think.

Try bleeding the master cylinder if you can. If you suspect that it isn't fully working - try an overhaul kit which is cheaper than a new master cylinder.

As for changing the proportioning valve .. that's your decision. My brakes now work though the truth is I don't actually know which was at fault as I changed both the master cylinder and proportioning valve at the same time. Maybe both were at fault, for whatever reason. I genuinely don't know.

The positive aspect is that you are doing your own work and know what you're doing. You're saving on labour charges.

Master Cylinder (Brake System) :
Worn or leaking brake master cylinder.
Brake Power Booster :
Damaged booster vacuum line/check valve, or diaphram .
Brake Proportioning Valve :
Improper installation/adjustment or damaged proportioning valve .

How easy is it to replace a leaking driver's brake line on a 1995 cutlass ciera?


In most cases on these older GM vehicles it is much easier to replace the lines from the master cylinder all the way to the rear wheels. You should be able to find brake lines that are preferred and have the correct fitting for what you need to do. Compression fittings are a definite No No

Some things to check ahead of time
1. Do all the bleeder screws open? If not you may be replacing wheel cylinders and calipers.
2. Are the brake hoses cracked? If they are might as well replace them at the same time.
3. Are the pads and shoes in good shape. If they are getting thin might as week replace them as well.
4. Do all the brake lines you need to replace come loose from the hoses, cylinders, master cylinder, proportioning valve, etc.

Just about every GM that I get in the shop with rusted brake lines to the rear end up with a $800 +/- bill. 3 hours labor, 20+ feet of line, proportioning valves (later models), fittings, wheel cylinders. And a bleed and flush.

The lines don't have to look pretty they just have to work!

Rear brakes lock when press brake pedal.


get is serviced.

its stuck in , low bed (loaded) mode. the lever is or parts in side

stuck in full load mode.

and guess what, if you bypass the valve, what will happen

the rear brake will lock, going fast and if on wet or worse roads. 10x worse. its there for a reason. to lower the brake pressure with no pickup bed load. or not heavy trailer tongue weight.



ever consider the rear brakes are bad. first. and not the valve.



service the rear shoes and slaves.

then check the bypass.



Does the truck still have the height sensing brake line bracket and line connected into the prop valve?

Proportioning valves in down position


Did you open brake system lines? If you did they need power bled. If not sometime proportions do go bad.

It has to be your proportioning valve, and it is probably jammed and blocking flow to the rear. You can either replace the valve or try to reset it. To reset, you need a way to put pressure into the rear brake exit port. If the valve has bleeder screws on it, try opening the front bleeder and pumping the pedal. If there is no bleeder on the valve, I have also heard of people opening the front caliper bleeders and pumping the brake to see if a little pressure in the rear will slide the piston open. No harm in trying these ideas before buying a new one, eh.

Pontiac G6 read disk brakes not showing any wear, emergency brake is being used.


Proportioning valve is not centered and the rear brakes are not functioning. To correct..... have someone apply hard brake pressure on pedal and some else crack open the bleeder screw on the a frontwheel. A click can beheard. the bleeder must be oened and clsed quickly. Follow the brake line s from the brake master cyl and you will be led to the proportioning valve. There is a pin sting out of both ends. They must be equally extended out on bot ends. Good Luck, Ned

No brake fluid flow to right rear brake


the stratus is know for clasped rear brake hoses .This stops the flow off brake fluid. try opening the brake lines at the master cylinder that go to the rear.pump up brakes first! if you got fluid than check the brake line if this is rear disc brakes on the line at the rear will be a built in proportioning valve.if drum loosen rubber hose line before the rubber part to see if you have fluid. If you do replace the brake hose! On you 74 challenger by the way i love dodge! any way on the valve there is a small button on the front of the proportioning valve that pops out it needs to be tap in lightly. also hit the brake peddel kind of hard a couple off times if that doesn't work. thanks for your question


p.s that hex bar on the is a junction not a proportioning valve .
