Question about 1987 Subaru Gl 4WD

1987 Subaru Gl AWD trying to remove external oil pump housing so gasket can be replaced. Have removed 4 outside casing bolts and oil pump will still not come off. What are we not doing correctly?

There could be a bolt on inside you havent found yet,,,Would be nice if you have a Hayes manual to tell you exacty where all bolts are located, 15.00 at Auto Zone

How i do the timing on my 87 subaru gl awd


It's a bit of a pain but here is what you set it to:

Driver side timing belt (No. 2) and No. 2 tensioner-1.8L engine

Passenger side timing belt (No. 1) and No. 1 tensioner


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
  3. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator belt.
  4. Remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the water pump pulley.
  5. Disconnect the electrical harness from the oil pressure switch.
  6. Remove the dipstick tube.
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  8. Remove the timing belt cover plate, if equipped.
  9. Remove the timing belt cover bolts on the left, right, and center covers.
  10. Remove the timing belt covers.
  11. Remove the rubber cover seal. Clean all mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Install a new timing belt cover seal.
  2. Install the timing belt covers on the engine using the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  3. Install the timing belt cover plate, if removed.
  4. Install the crankshaft pulley, and tighten the bolt to 69-76 ft. lbs. (93-103 Nm)
  5. Install the dipstick tube.
  6. Connect the electrical harness to the oil pressure switch.
  7. Install the water pump pulley and loosely install the mounting bolts.
  8. Install the drive belt and adjust the tension as necessary. Tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
  9. Tighten the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.

Replacing the water Pump


Here's a step by step to remove and replace the water pump on your Wrangler.

Be advised, all 4.0L engines, some 2.8L engines and some 4.2L engines have a reverse rotating water pump. You can ID these from the word REVERSE or REV imprinted or cast on the housing and/or fan. There will also be an 'R' stamped into the impellor.

Make sure your replacement pump is the correct type, If not, expect some major turmoil.

The procedure:
1. Remove negative battery cable
2. Open radiator valve - drain cooling system
3. Remove cooling fan and shroud
4. Remove belts (see my tip on serpentine belts if needed)
5. Remove water pump pulley from hub
6. Remove hoses from water pump
7. Remove accessory brackets from the water pump.
When removing the P/S pump and/or AC compressor, leave the hoses attached and move them out of the way.
8 . Remove the remaining bolts and detach the water pump from the engine. The bolts are three different lengths. Make note of where they came from.
9. Compare the new and old pumps. Make sure they match.
10. Scrape off the old gasket material.
11. Apply a thin continuous line of RTV High Temp sealant to the water pump side of the gasket.
12. Put a couple bolts through the pump to hold the gasket in place and mount the gasket.
13. Apply Another coat to the other side of the gasket.
14. Attach the pump to the engine. Screw the bolts in finger tight.
15. Attach the remaining bolts.
16. Tighten them up in 1/4 turn increments.
17. Re-attach all the stuff you removed
18. Refill the coolant, adjust belt tension.
19. Run the engine and check for leaks.

1987 Subaru GL 1.8 liter automatic, 2WD. Fuel-injected. Quit running at 65MPH on freeway, coasted into parking lot. Parked. Cannot start. Noticed crank case was accidently overfilled on dip stick approx...


first check the timing belt because it may be broke.Another solution could be a clogged catalytic converter.It really sounds like a timing belt.Remove inspection cover for the timing belt and have someone turn over the motor and see if your camshaft is turning.

Where is the oil pump located on a 1999 ford taurus and whats items do i need replace a long with the oil pump


Remove oil pan oil pump and pick up tube & screen will be bolted on.
You should get oil pump lube, carb. cleaner, new pump oil,
oil pan gasket, silicon, oil & filter, loc-tight, gasket remover & tools metric, 1/4 drive socket set, scraper / putty knife, 2 jack stands, a jack or ramps,
& blocks for rear wheels.
Lets get started.

(1)Get your car up on stands or ramps block rear tires.

(2)Drain oil & remove oil filter remove battery cable NEG (-)

(3)remove pan

(4)remove old pump

(5)remove pick up tube from oil pump

(6)Now clean tube & screen with carb. cleaner place on news paper to dry.

(7) clean all old gasket off from engine & pan also clean bolts

(8)place silicon on pan place gasket on pan put bolts in from gasket side to Aline holes put a side to dry

(9) Attach tube to pump with a little loc-tight fill pump with oil pump lube

(10)attach pump to engine block make sure rod goes in proper & bolt are tight.

(11)Bolt pan back on engine using a 1/4 in drive ratchet don't over tighten bolts get all bolts in now slow run each bolt in starting at 1 end then jump to the other then go to bolt at other end a cross from 1st bolt. Do this till all bolts are ran in. Now tighten bolts look for gasket on side of pan.If it starts to push out stop go to next bolt.

(12)Instill new filter & drain plug,& pour in oil

(13)Replace Neg - cable

I hope this works for you it's a basic oil pump change for most cars.
Some take more steps.

Have a 1999 eclipse 2.0 L...Need to replace oil pan. Do I have to remove any other parts to get the pan off


2.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine oil.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Engine undercover Front exhaust pipe Lower oil pan bolts and lower pan Cover Upper oil pan bolt and upper pan Baffle plate

To install:
  1. Clean all gasket surfaces of the cylinder block and the upper and lower oil pan.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    Baffle plate
  3. Apply a 0.16 in. (4mm) bead of sealant to the gasket surfaces of the upper oil pan.
    Upper oil pan onto the cylinder block within 15 minutes after applying sealant. Tighten the bolts as shown in the accompanying figure.

  4. Apply 0.16 in. (4mm) bead of sealant to the gasket surfaces of the lower oil pan.
    Lower oil pan and tighten the bolts, in the sequence shown, to 88-106 inch lbs. (10-12 Nm)

  5. Lower the vehicle and fill the crankcase to the proper level with clean engine oil.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.
Non-Turbo Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container.
  4. Once the oil has completely drained, install the plug and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  5. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  6. Remove the engine oil dipstick and tube assembly.
  7. Remove the front plate.
  8. Unfasten the oil pan mounting bolts, then remove the oil pan and gasket.

To install:
  1. Apply sealant at the point where the engine block meets the oil pump.
  2. Use a new gasket and install the oil pan. Tighten the mounting bolts to 8.9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  3. Install the front plate.
  4. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  5. Install the dipstick and tube assembly.
  6. Safely lower the vehicle to the floor.
  7. Refill the crankcase with oil to the proper level.
  8. nnect the negative battery cable.
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Turbo Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front exhaust pipe.
  4. Remove the exhaust pipe and muffler assembly.
  5. Drain the engine oil into a suitable container. Once the oil has drained completely, tighten the plug to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  6. Remove the dipstick and tube.
  7. For AWD vehicles, remove the transfer case assembly as follows:
    1. With the propeller shaft still installed, remove the transfer mounting bolt.
    2. Insert a suitable prytool in between the transfer case and transaxle, then remove the transfer case from the center shaft.
    3. Remove the transfer case from the center shaft. Do NOT tilt the transfer assembly to the rear or oil will leak out.
    4. After removing the transfer assembly, insert tool MB991193 or equivalent, to prevent the oil from leaking out. Use a piece of wire to suspend the transfer case from the body.

  8. Remove the bell housing cover.
  9. Disconnect the oil return pipe from the oil pan.
  10. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts. Tap the oil pan seal breaker MB998727 or equivalent between the oil pan and the engine block to break the seal and remove the oil pan.

To install:
  1. Clean the sealing surface on the oil pan and engine block. Apply a continuous bead of sealant MD970389 or equivalent to the oil pan.
  2. Clean the oil pan mounting bolt holes in the oil seal case.
  3. Install the oil pan to the engine block. Tighten the mounting bolts to 5.1 ft. lbs. (6.9 Nm).
  4. Use a new gasket and connect the oil return pipe to the oil pan.
  5. Install the bell housing cover.
  6. If equipped with AWD, install the transfer case assembly.
  7. Install the dipstick and tube assembly.
  8. Install the front exhaust pipe.
  9. Install the exhaust pipe and muffler.
  10. Install a new oil filter.
  11. Safely lower the vehicle to the floor and add five quarts of oil to the crankcase.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable.
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Gear oil leak in front and gear shift lever loose


I would have a mechanic look at it for you. Sounds like it could be an oil seal or it could have a crack in the case or it could be a rear engine seal is shot ?

Front diff oil leak


remove entire trans,remove 8 bolts and then remove front differential case at this time you will need to remove torque convertor with tube do not remove this tube from the convertor it drive the oil pump, the gasket is liquid gasket make sure surface is clean,also at this time replace torque convertor seal and seal tube this tube seperates transmission fluid from gear oil good luck

1987 SUBARU GL WAGON 4WD WILL NOT IDLE RUNS FINE OTHERWISE


Either idle control valve/sensor, or a vacuum leak. Check all intake bolts for tightness, wiggle all hoses around with the engine running, and listen for a hissing. Try dumping some soapy water on the intake where it joins to the block, and see if it bubbles profusely. If it does, you may have an intake leak at the gasket.

did you overheat the vehicle though?..thermostat /circulation issues/ bad radiator cap not allowing system to pressurize and flow..etc....do a pressure test of radiator and cap and advise
