Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

3 Answers

1998 Ford Explorer: My mother lost both keys. I called and they do not make replacement keys for the vehicle before 2000. The keys had the chip and the Explorer has Auto Theft. Would I be able to use the ignition key switch and door locks from the '96 Ford Explorer XLT that I have?

My Mom found the keys but last week she lost them again. She has dementia and believes she tossed them in the garbage. Have searched everywhere and no luck. I have been on the phone with locksmiths and the dealer. The dealer told me that I had to get a new ignition and responder chip keys, then pay $95 an hour(est. time-3 hrs. labor). So, I'm looking at close to $600. Can I simply buy another steering column with keys and change that? I know about the computer reading the chip, etc. but I'm hoping for a break. Thanks for all your help.

The keys and locks are not only specific to a particular ford explorer year model but they are also specific to a particular model.

Sounds like you got bad information. if you call the dealership they will make a new key and program it to your ignition.

Ford explorer , car keys replacements. I have lost my ignition / alarm keys and need inexpensive replacements please. Thank you in anticipation David Byrne

I think you can use the sbb key to pro for a new key.
Before running SBB key programmer, you need insert the blank new key into your car keyhole;turn on ignition switch;Insert SBB 16-pin interface into your car OBD2 diagnostic seat. SBB key programmer copies chip according to car model.

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer, lost the ignition keys and I found out the keys for ignition have a microchip. Can I put a regular key w/ cylinder or what are my options to keep costs down?

Limited options without rigging up something with a starter button which would not be at all attractive or practical.

I would check online for companies specializing in cutting chipped keys before paying a Ford dealership. I had to buy one of these kind of keys for my Toyota Camry recently and I think it was around $85.

Good luck!

I lost my keys to my 96' ford taurus if any body could help me with a low price in finding one

If you go to any Ford dealer with a picture ID, and ownership proof (Title), they can cut a duplicate key for your car. A simple one, without a chip on it, will cost you as low as $10. With this key you can unlock the door and get in your car. But there is a small problem. Your car key might have a chip on it.
For the 1999 model year, all Ford Motor Company vehicles equipped with the passive anti theft system will be using the PATS II system. The PATS II system was introduced on roughly half of the PATS equipped vehicles for the 1998 model year. The other half of the PATS equipped vehicles for the 1998 model year were equipped with the PATS I system. Many 2000 and later Ford Vehicles Use the E-PATS system, which uses an encrypted transponder in the key.
The Ford dealer will explain you if you need a simple $10 key, or a chipped one $50 key. If your key has a chip, then you have to reprogram it. Normally the dealer will provide you a written instruction how to do it.

No you will need the key with the chip in it or the truck will not run. The key has a transmitter in it and when you put it in the ignition it sends a freqwency out and that is how the truck starts or dosent get stolen if ya dont got the key.
