What most likely has happened is you have blown a torque converter seal, we see this all the time but you need to get it looked at immediately if you try to keep driving it you will damage the transmission if you haven't already, also with the fluid blowing all over the exhaust under the van there is the very real possibility of a fire.

That transmission is one that has been used for years in Dodge and Plymouth vans. Do you know when the last time was that the fluid was flushed out and replaced? It's pretty important that it be done every 90K miles.......have it checked out.

So I was helping move my Grandma & Grandpa. just cruising along with no load on the van and i heard it rev really high. I didn't think of anything about it but then i heard it again and I said "I do...

at this point a quick fix fluid additive would do more damage than good. putting in an additive would only loosen any grime built up over the last 150,000 miles. sounds like the 3rd gear clutch pack inside the trans is glazed causing the slipping. I would in this case if you have a few good friends and a little knowledge I would look in the direction of replacing the trans with a used one from your local wrecking yard. change the fluid and filter before installing and drain and replace the fluid in the torque converter. this should get you through the year at least, You can do it.

It is due to be rebuilt

The fluid change didn't help any,
maybe made it worse.

I know you will have issues with my

Starts out in 3rd gear

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmision is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the underhood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.
What is "limp-home mode" ? This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.
Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST. This guide is meant for problems that do not show up as PCM codes (like shift A&B solenoid failures, for example).
Thank you for using fixya and good luck

1998 Dodge caravan AWD transmision slips at full throttle

Have you serviced the transmission latley? fluid, filter, band adjustment

Usually under heavy throttle causing the slip is caused by a seal in the pump leaking off hydraulic pressure letting the clutches slip.

Does it slip in all gears or just 1st.?
Does it slip in reverse?
The reason I ask this is because 1st and reverse use different fluid pathways,

also you can take it to a tranny shop and have them check the fluid pressure at the accumlator port to determine what the exact problem is,but my advice is to just drive it easy and make it last as long as you can,a new or rebuild tranny from a dealer would run 2500 or more.

there is a website www.car-part.com that you can use to find a replacement transmission

Sure sounds like the torque converter is bad to me. Usually after the fluid gets hot, this problem shows up. Specially since it's in ALL gears......sorry o;(>
