First question is it smoke or steam ? if if ligers in the air behind you as you drive with little dissipation or if its steam it will dissapear more quickly . either way , head gasket is first . once saw a car do that excessive engine oil put in by owner . giant flumes of white smoke . if you ever want a true smoke scren to get away then adding about 2 to 4 quarts of oil extra . man it is something to see

My Toyota Hiace bus 5L engine is hard start. it crank when starting when Push Start it start. lect ctns okay new glob plug installed but yet cannot start. pls identify andadvise the problem?

I believe you earlier posted a question about a smoky engine.

Burning oil produces a very distinctive blue-grey smoke often accompanied by a sort of burned eggs smell in advanced cases.

White smoke is either steam from an internal coolant leak or can be unburned fuel in some cases.

Dark grey - black smoke is invariably partly burned fuel. Engines produce black smoke when either there is a small excess of fuel entering the cylinders or the fuel is being delivered in a form that makes it impossible to burn completely - Poor injector spray patterns, for instance.

Lots of people reckon bad injectors have no effect on starting but in my experience they have a lot of effect. Push starting produces a higher piston speed that tends to overcome problems like bad injectors or low compression from worn valves, pistons, rings, bores, etc.

I suggest you remove the injectors for testing/overhaul and ensure the battery and starter are in absolutely top condition for a good cranking speed, also ensure the new glow plugs are receiving current and the relay is working OK.

1.9tdi hi guys my polo have a hard start problem cold or hot is it normal it crank for about 3sec and then it starts injectors and glow plugs are fine

Hi Armo 3 secs is not too bad. You could fit a inline non-return valve to the fuel line before the fuel filter. It could be leaking back. That's why you need to spin it over to get the pressure back up. It's worth a shot. Regards Jim...

DI have a 1983 ford f250 with 6.9 diesel engine. The previous owner told me that the front fuel tank did not work; he said that he was running the truck on the front tank once and that the truck started...

have you looked into the injectors, or injector balance? glow plugs just preheat the cylinders before you start turning the engine over. if the injectors are dumping too much fuel it will run rich and blow black smoke, lean it will dump white smoke, same as if it has an internal coolant leak, but smell different. Ford has had problems with EGR systems on some of their diesels, being an older truck how many miles is on it? and the front fuel tank could have a bad fuel pump, pretty common for them to do what you have described. Also might want to have the timing looked at on it! It ignites off of pressure, and if the timing is off it will adversely affect the ignition of the fuel which will make for hard starts, and poor running. there is a lot that needs to be looked at to figure this one out! could be quite a few different things. Good luck!

Audi 2.5tdi white smoke on exhaust low revs

Hi
White smoke is usually a good sign of un-burnt diesel so reading your post and all the things you have already changed ie the glow plugs I would have the injectors tested to make sure they are atomising properly as it sounds to me like when your car isn't under load ie at low revs you have a cylinder that isn't firing correctly
Hope this helps Nick

My discovery 2 is a pain to start when it's cold sounds like it's only firing on two cylinders it's deisel,I've had a new head and head gasket fitted it smokes really bad and gradually picks up revs when...

would need to play with it and try it myself when its cold, but i would be inclined to check out the glow plugs and maybe even have the injectors reset before playing with teh injector pump ,also fitting a non return valve in the fuel inlet line and one in the return in case the valves in the injector pump are starting to play up

Bmw 325tds diesel flowing back to tank when parked

usual problem ,valves in injector worn for the fuel pump.easy quick fix this one ,fit a non return valve in the inlet pipe, check flow direction on valve when fitting and evan better as well is another in the bleed off return pipe .valves available from a motor factor or a specialist garage like bosch or lucas ,cut pipe and fit the valve with a piece of rubber pipe to connect the valve in line.or listen to the people who want to milk the golden cow and have the whole injector pump overhauled .

White smoke is a sign of unburnt diesel fuel, check your glowplugs as thats the most common cause when starting .It will start but not hot enough to burn fuel at start up, also check glowplug relay if not the plugs
