Question about 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

It shouldn't be difficult to find a replacement in a local scrapyard for a decent price. Though the unit itself is a bit heavy, removal is fairly straight forward... just unbolt anything you see holding it in, put the new unit in its place and replace the bolts. Buy a "drum to drum" unit including brake assemblies,
only thing you may need to swap is the abs sensors from your old one. Make sure you bleed the brakes after it's installed. You can get an inexpensive manual such as chilton or haynes for specific instructions if you have any problems (available in most larger parts stores).
If you have four wheel drive make sure the unit you buy has the exact same gear ratio as the one you are removing. (count the number of gear teeth on the ring gear and pinion gear). If not 4x4, you can use any ratio but if you are happy with what you have, match it. If the one you buy isn't a match, it will change the perceived speed and therefore the speedometer will read incorrectly and possibly the abs system may "think" there's a problem and turn the light on the dash on.

Are you sure it isn't just a u-joint, or the pinion bearing? The whole rear end is going to be pricey, unless you can get one from an auto wrecker.
