The position and function of the fuses is normally marked on the inside of the fuse box cover and also in the owner's handbook. If you are looking for a particular blown fuse, work your way through the fuses looking for a blown one. It is not difficult.

Getting at the wiring of a fuse can be awkward, it might be easier to try pick up a wire in the engine compartment or under the dash. Select a wire that is live with the ignition on, the easiest way to do this is to get one of those little continuity tester that has a sharp pin on it and a crocodile clip on a wire on the other side. Switch the ignition on, clamp the clip to an earthed bolt etc and start poking into likely wires, the thicker the better. Ignition wires are a good bet, the electric choke might work but could take a feed straight off the alternator. If you wish to use a fuse connection, use the same method to locate a live fuse with the ignition on. Good luck.

where ive seen online it says to hook it into the radio fuse... my radio's power wire is spliced onto the lighter ports 12v line.. and the lighter port always feeds power yet the stereo will only turn on if the key is in acc position or on the on position... why is that? and does that mean the radio fuse is always hot?

The cigar lighter is usually always live - on most cars anyway. The radio should be wired through the accessory position of the ignition switch so that it will go off when the keys are pulled out but can be played without there being power to the ignition system, Check the input to the radio, if it is only on when the key is in ACC or ON, that wire will be fine, but there may be wires in the engine that are easier to get at.

alright.. thanks for the help.. oh, one more question... if i wanted to hardwire a cigar splitter would i do the same thing? or do i need to do something else?

Here in darkest Africa we have not heard of cigar splitters, please explain and let me see what I can do.

  • onemanarmy95 Mar 13, 2011

cigar splitter basically takes one cigar port and turns it into multiple.. the one i have plugs into the cigar port and creates a total of 4 ports

Ok, Got it. We know them as power take off points. You could go into the back of the cigar lighter and make a solder joint onto the cigar live feed and then attach the earth lead to an earthed screw on the body work. Remember that the cigar lighter wiring and fuse are limited to a 30 amp supply and exceeding that will blow the fuse and/or cause damage to the wiring. Been nice chatting to you.

How hard is it to replace an entire fuse block in a 1984 El Camino?

I've never seen a fuse block that was bad enough to need replacement. generally speaking, one or a few connections may be bad or it may need to be taken apart and cleaned. At worst, you may need to re-route a few of the fuses. That can be done by splicing into the appropriate wires and running them to a smaller fuse block (you can usually get one at a marine supply house). The same but less neat approach is to just use an inline fuse for each and label them so you know what they serve. Most important is to use the proper gauge wire and the correct amp fuse (style does not matter..only amp rating)
Before buying it though, make sure you know what is working and what's not. Blaming a fuse box for a major problem with an important system could cause you major headaches later.
Look for wire splices and things that look non factory. People can mess things up worse than the car can do to itself.
As far as replacing one, you'd probably have a difficult time just finding one. then, cutting it out of the donor vehicle and re-wiring will likely not be terrible but is time consuming and you'd need to write down and diagram everything very accurately to get it back together without problems. Check before believing this but I'm pretty sure chevelle harness is the same as a 'camino.

I beleive that would be the resistor pack that would need replacing.

It is usually near the fan.
