Mazda RX8 Engine Failure

Both Lazarus Motors and Fury Mazda (Mazda Agents) have undertaken diagnostic checks on the engine and proved that the seal to the rear rotar had imploded causing water ingress through the engine system pushing water out of the exhaust. RX8 engineering specialists from Supertech stated that this is a common fault with the early RX8 engines and Mazda has since improved the quality of the Rotar Seals. However Mazda is refusing to pay for this internal fault which costs in the region of R55,000 for a new engine installation. What do I do?

They shouldnt refuse to repair it, since mazda has already acknowleged that they have a faulty rotor housing and upped the warranty to 10 years 100,000 miles. if there is no modifications done to it lfor more power, you should contact corporate. thats your best bet as of now. if you have modded the engine in anyway, they can refuse to replace it.

Hi,

see if you can find a local mechanic-not agent who works on mazdas (RX-7s,) take it there or call them and see what they can do. maybe the older style rotary can be retrofitted. maybe call some junkyards and see what they have. You might be able to replace the expensive rotary with a standard mazda 4 cyl(miata) as well. not as much fun, but mazda 4 cylinders are pretty good motors if taken care of.

Rx8 blue smoke

Blue smoke is caused by burning oil, if it only puffs for a minute on initial start up I wouldn't worry. It is really common for newer fuel injected engines to blow a small amount off blue smoke on cold startup. Plus rx8 use oil while the engine is on, if you are new to rotary engines then a little bit of history on this engine is they do burn much more oil than a typical piston combustion engine, that is due to the lubrication system, it actually uses oil in the entire rotary housing so the rotors dont get too hot. you are supposed to check/add oil every 2 gas fill ups. you would think the would come up with a better system, but thats the downside to a rotary. they are mean engines though. they are a 1.3L but, your oil seals might be going or your ignition coils or spark plugs may be going bad.

My 2004 rx8 developed a slow start and when i start the engine it will never move, after pushing the gas peddle engine stops?

Have a compression done as the early motor has problems with the quality of the apex seals . IN rotary motors if it seems to wind over for ever then the compression is too low to fire the mixture.. A good engine will start in 6 revolutions of the crank shaft.

When idling from start up runs ok til revs come down then engine grumbles under 1000 rpm

The RX8 is a rotary engine correct? If so these engines seals are not very strong, it could be seals around the rotor. Also, these rotary engines never had a great idle.

I have a 2004 mazda rx8 and I noticed that sometimes when I turn it off I still hear the engine fan running. after 10-15 mins it turns off. is this normal

Check your Antifreeze Level. Is it low? If it is add antifreeze and then check for a leak. Look closely around the radiator. My RX8 was doing the same thing and the leak was at the radiator.
