Question about 2000 Chevrolet Tracker

4 Answers

2000 Chevy Tracker stalls or cuts off after running for a while...maybe gets too hot. Will restart after 10-15 minutes. If car idles in traffic or thru drive-thru service or if A/C is running the car seems to cut off sooner. Any idea of the problem? I'm told the sensor was checked, but how do I know?

It sounds like your ECU is failing when it sits in the heat for a while. It's probably due to a faulty solder joint, and the heat may cause the board to warp momentarily, causing the engine to shut off. After the board cools down, you can start the vehicle again. You can test this by using a large fan, sealed ice pack, or similar to cool the ECU, while running the vehicle. If it sits and runs fine for longer than usual, replace the ECU. If it still shuts off, you may have a sensor that is failing when it gets hot, which will probably cut the spark, causing it to not start until the sensor resets. This is more complicated to track down because each sensor must be monitored while running the vehicle to know which on is failing when the engine shuts off.

I have a 2001 Tracker with the 2.0L engine and it did the same thing...and after replacing the fuel pump, ECM and coils it still did the same thing. And it wasn't throwing any codes for the mechanics I had checking it. What it eventually was after replacing $500 worth of parts was a $75 cam sensor which you can change yourself.

You can check the timing sensor by pouring cold water on it. It is mounted on the back of the engine just below the top off the valve cover.

Also check the iac idle air control valve. the stem on the inside gets warn and then it falls and closes all the way. the pcm can't read that the stem is warn. so then the issue is a needle in a hay stack or phantom mechanics call mites. it mite be this and it mite be that. then u pay big bills. it wasn't on the codes and the ohms test was a pass. when i took the iac valve off and hooked it to its power and turned the key to its on position a few times the stem fell right out. if this helps please feel free to spread the word to help others save big cash.

2003 chevy tracker starts ok cold; but when hot it starts and then stalls.

It could be a clogged catalytic converter or bad o2 sensor. go to autozone and have them scan it ( for free) and post what codes and probable fixes they give you (they'll give you a print out)

2000 Chev Tracker cuts off after running for a while. It does this at slow speed, like in traffic. Also, will not restart after running for a while. After about 15 minutes it will start.

I would change the fuel filter before anything else, however, a fuel filter would cause it to cut off no matter how fast you are driving.

When idling my jeep overheats. The cooling fan is running and it speeds up when temperature goes up. The temperature gets close to 260 degrees and the engine tries to stall. when I start moving it cools...

At idling speed an engine does build up a lot of heat and the cooling fan will kick in. In slow moving traffic or traffic jams the temperature gauge can touch the red - particularly on hot days. The reason it cools down when you start moving is because of the air flow through the radiator.

Presumably there are no leaks from the cooling system otherwise you would have mentioned it. In normal circumstances the fan will not be running as you are driving at speed, as the air-flow through the radiator is sufficient to cool things. The fan only kicks in to get rid of excess heat - and this usually occurs at idling speed or after you have parked the car.

If the fan is running all the time as you drive, this points to either a fault in the fan switch, or the car is running too hot. presumably in normal driving the fan isn't running and the temperature gauge reads normal?

It is common - in stationary traffic many cars overheat (particularly big engined models) try to stall and 'cut out'. Restarting can be difficult until the engine cools down.

Is your car overheating in normal driving conditions or just at idle speed? Overheating in normal driving conditions can be caused by things like a failing water pump, blocked radiator, collapsed hose, faulty thermostat or, in the worst case scenario, cylinder head problems.

Overheating at idling speed is 'common'. Check your coolant level. If your car isn't using/losing coolant then there probably is no major problem. You can flush out the cooling system and refill with new coolant - and also check your radiator. Are the cooling fins crumbling with age? Or maybe they're partly clogged with insects and debris from the road? A blast with a hosepipe wil sort that out ..

The question is how much does your car overheat in normal driving? If it doesn't .. it appears as though you have nothing to worry about as such. Most cars have 2 speed fans... the 2nd faster stage kicks in at some point dependant on engine temperature. Perfectly normal.

it's the cps (crankshaft position sensor)
it cuts off the power to the fuel pump as a preventive mesure, it's a very common problems with the catera

My car stalls in traffic, some time it won't start. i have had this car to the shop twice. its there now. the car will stall, cut off want start. then when i get it restarted it may run good for a day or...

a bad crank sensor, or cam sensor will cause this--no start, hard time starting, shut off while driving. these will set a fault code. have engine scanned. auto zone will do this for free. p0340 is a bad cam sensor,

Car cutting out when idleing

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Fuel pump? That is odd, it seems there is no issue with getting fuel. I would check the idle and the choke settings. Try tweaking those a bit.
