It the sound is coming from a belt then you just need to adjust the tensioner, which is a pretty simple DIY operation.

If the sound can be heard on low RPM only then it could be a going bad water pump. On early stages the sound will go away after the engine warms up.

Try to adjust the tensioner first since it is easier than replacing water pump.

1995 nissan maxima alternator replacement

1995-98 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the splash guard on the right side of the vehicle.
  3. Loosen the alternator belt idler pulley.
  4. Slip the drive belt off the alternator pulley.
  5. Remove the four air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Remove the radiator fan and fan shroud.
  7. Move the air conditioning compressor forward.
  8. Disconnect the alternator harness connector.
  9. Remove the alternator mounting bolts, and lower the alternator from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Hold the alternator in place and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Plug in the alternator harness connector.
  3. Move the air conditioning compressor back into location.
  4. Install the radiator cooling fan and shroud.
  5. Install the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Place the drive belt on the alternator pulley.
  7. Tighten the drive belt to the proper tension with the idler pulley.
  8. Install the splash guard.
  9. Connect the negative battery terminal.
Proper belt tension is important. A belt that is too tight may cause alternator bearing failure; one that is too loose will cause a gradual battery discharge and/or belt slippage, resulting in belt breakage from overheating.

Why does it squeal when cold?

anne, are you a mechanic or asking for hubbY
are you hands on person, willing to learn?
i be not. so why ask at all.?
why not do what 99% do , get it serviced.
you think blind guessing fixes cars?
well you tell is then, its 1 in 100 shot.
how told you that a real ASE mech,
no ,he'd have corrected it now. and you'd not be here. right.
so its RUMOR< Mr/ RUMOR told me belt is ok
i say 50% bunk.,that.
belts in fact get hard with age and make noise.
for sure cold , its harder.

this is not a guess. its a list of common failures.
1; bad belt, gee its cheap fix if i guess right.
2: not tensioned correctly or the tension or is bad.
3: the pump/alt ,p/s, or a/c compr. bearing are bad.
4: bent accessory brakes, or broke causing belt disaligment and squeeels.
5: wrong belt. (too long as many stores sell)
6: a belt from fleabay china for $3, a POS.
7: defective pulleys. bent or cracked (any )idlers.

guess what, we cant just guess , takes looking
and finding and testing....
and am not doing 101 on that.

How many types of bearings are in the front end?

Clunking going slow sounds like u joints bad in the driveshaft(s). Engine has idler pulley and air conditioning clutch bearings, alternator and power steering pumps have bearings, bearing in clutch on fan can go bad making noises at slower speed. Noises only while driving are drive train related. Try another mechanic's diagnosis.

When im taking off slowly ther is squeak from front end sounds like squeaky fan belt but is coming from underneath cud it b clutch its ok when driving just there when i take off or driving slow . please...

it could be the clutch throw out bearing making the noise however it still could be a belt.check the condition of the belt and tightness of the belt(s) as well as the tensioner first as this is the cheapest to do if its the problem.the reason the noise goes away while driving is because the load(torque) on the component is less than when your taking off from a stop or driving slow.

Squealing sound

The belt is the most probable cause.

What else it could be?:
Bearing failure.
Alternator failure.

RECOMENDATION:
Replace the Belt with a new factory original belt.

Hope this tip helps.

I need to change the timing belt . i have a 2003 hyundai sante fe and the belts are squealling

If your belts are squealing it is the drive belt/belts that need attention not the timing belt. You need to check your belt tension and condition and replace as needed. If a timing belt ever got to the point that it might squeal the car would not run because it would be too far out of time. Your belts will all be external whereas at timing belt is internal and a major part of the engine.
