After getting a new warrent, rego & full tank of gas, the next day had a hard time starting. Once started, have to keep the revs up high constantly to stop it conking out. One mechanic says that its either the gasket or an oil ring as the car is alternating between running on 3 and 4 cylinders. Had a look and the coolant is rather low. could this have anything to do with this problem? Radiator water is good as - green with antifreeze as it should be:-) Any suggestions? Have been quoted 3.5k to fix based on labour alone so any info would be much appreciated!

Sadly my man it sounds like a head gasket. any good mechanic would have recommended checking this first especially being a subaru (quite common). get a compression test done. and see if there is a white "foam" in your oil. if so the news is all bad. sorry but hope this helps

Most important- tune-up! Make sure your plugs, distributor cap and rotor (if so equipped), air and fuel filter are OK and have been changed (at minimum) according to your owner's guide.
If your vehicle cranks over slow when cold-starting, consider a new battery. In cold weather, batteries lose efficiency, and older batteries lose more power than new ones.
Next... Gas - the fuel in cold weather states has a formula change in winter months to lower emissions- sometimes going to the next higher grade of fuel (example: from regular to mid-grade) helps.
If you have a garage, keeping the vehicle inside makes a huge difference with cold weather starting.
Keep your fuel tank full. Running the tank down and leaving it near empty most of the time allows condensation, which will result in getting water in your fuel, leading to hard starts and poor performance, and the increased risk of "rusting through" which will cause a leaky fuel tank.
Hi, You may have put too much in for the amount of gasoline you had. Or when you put it in, the truck was about to not start anyway. In other words, if you put it in and then the truck did not start. You would not have given enough of an opportunity for the Cleaner to get to your injectors. If you put it in and started the engine successfully and it worked for a bit and then shut down. Then there was to much. Here is what you can do hopefully under certain circumstances. If there is hardly any gasoline in your tank. Get a 5 gallon gas tank and fill it and put it into the Pathfinder. Then get some more gasoline and do the same again. That should dilute what is in the gas tank. Then crank the engine enough to move the old cleaner out of the fuel injectors. The pathfinder may then be flooded so just leave it alone for 1/2 hour and then try to start it again. It may still require quite a bit of cranking. So you will want to give it a rest and not push the starter motor. It the original problem was a clogged injector. Well, It ain't clogged now. turn your key on, DO NOT TOUCH THE GAS PEDAL and start, good luck. Pumping the pedal doesn't do a thing for fuel injection. In thre days of carburetors and you had control of your own property, Pumping did a couple of things. It set the choke and added more fuel. But that was yesterday and yesterday's gone.
if you have an electric fuel pump that would explain the hum. unhook your incoming fuel line and blow the line clear, sounds like you've got some junk in your tank.it'll build up on the screen in the tank then fall off (at least partially) when your making turns or hitting bumps or holes. next time it's only got a gallon or so of fuel i'd drop the tank and check the pickup tube inside. sux but that's the only way to get to it. while you've got the tank off and out from under the jeep, might as well clean it out real good and replace anything inside (usually the screen) that doesn't look right, dirty etc. wouldn't hurt to run a bottle of fuel system cleaner in the next full tank of fuel either. preferably as soon as you put your tank back. good luck
Sounds like the Fuel Pump, which is located in the Gas Tank, ahead of the rear wheels, basically under the rear door. The gas tank itself is not hard to remove, and you could get a kit available online. It's probably easier to do if you have ramps and back the rear wheels onto those two ramps, you can't do it as easily by just jacking up the car. If you have two hydraulic jacks, that might work as well.
If you buy the part, you want to bring it to a gas station to remove the gas tank, they should be able to do all the work for you in about one hour.
First place to check is the battery. Old ones can push your lights , radio, etc, but the starter is the real load. . Can verify this by using jumper cables to a running vehicle and watch your machine fire right up! The reason mornings are the worst, is the battery has had the most time to discharge, and it is probably cooler outside.
