Question about 1989 Chevrolet Astro Cargo

2 Answers

I have a 1989 astro van 4.3l L and my automatic belt tensioner is to tight. I've installed a new belt and after a month. The tensioner is now close to the all the way to the stop position. What is happening ? Is my belt streching ?

Thanx's. That was my first thought. I upgraded to the dayco 28 doller one. The best one available. The thing is when, I'm at a stop light with the brake down the tensioner makes a tapping sound from hitting the stop thing.

If it is tight that is good. It is possible the belt streched. But if it is loose you should check if you got the right belt,( if you have air cond). If you got the right belt make sure it is routed the right way. If that is all correct then you might want to check other pulleys by taking off the belt and turning them or wiggling them to find play or a lock up. Sometimes the idle pulley goes bad or the powersteering pump shank on those go bad.

Some belts do stretch. as long as the tensioner is keeping the belt properly tensioned, and the belt is not getting damaged i would leave it. a new tensioner will have a new spring which will be stiffer than a worn in one. maybe try a belt the next grade up.

How do i put a belt on 2005 chevy astro van 4.3

If you are speaking of the main serpentine belt, a tool must be used to turn the belt tensioner against its spring tension thus making the belt loose.

Installed new tensioner for serpintine belt, can't take tension off belt , it will not move in counter clockwise direction like its supose to, why ?

You can look at tensioner and see which way it will turn, with racket, you may have to turn from below. It is a tight fit but bolt doesn't need to be loose.

How do i remove the fan to replace the serpentine belt

do not remove the fan. you have a automatic belt tensioner. look for small pulley to passenger side of fan. pulley will be attached tp leaver which is the tentioner. on the leaver in a 3/8 dive hole in it so you can attach a ratchet or braker bar in . once you in mount ratchet push or pull on ratchet to release tention hold back on tentioner and take belt off pay close attention to how the belt is routed.

My 94 astro is making nosies by the belt or the tenchner i dont no? which one is it?

If the belt is tight ? It might be the tensioner. The tension wheel shouldn't have any play at all. If you can grab it and move it slightly? It is bad . If its tight. Take the belt off and try all the pulleys for play. The alternator and the water pump. I first if the belt is cracked and old or is lose? i would replace the belt ori would try tightening it

Serpentine belt broke on 87 ford econo van

ps...you do not have to Post another Question....just Add a Comment to this question.

"HOW TO": I professionally prefer the Serpentine Tensioner Tool.
Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner(s).
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (located on the Tensioner Pulley rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley and Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.

How do I replace the belt tensioner pulley on my 1994 Astro van with no air conditioning? Is the pulley bolt left hand threaded?

You don't need to remove any parts.

Locate the belt tensioner and attach a wrench to the boss provided. Typically, you rotate the tensioner so the pulley moves away from the belt. You may find it will take several tries to position the wrench, or get the correct wrench so that you can rotate the tensioner sufficiently to remove the belt.

Install new belt in reverse order.
