Check the neutral safety switch they do have a Tennessee the float back and forth sometimes they go bad but sometimes you have to realize that animal is f****** so you probably have to replace the new to safety switch that I had to do that in the past I've been a mechanic for 43 years

Sounds like the park neutral switch on the shifter is out of adjustment.

where do i fix that or how would io know if thats the problem for it not starting??

  • Matt Morgan Mar 13, 2011

If it has the shifter on the floor it would be under the center console by the shifter pivot (most likely place for this type) if it has the shifter on the column then it would be under the dash on the lower part of the steering column. Some rare cases it would be on the outside of the transmission where the cable attaches.

  • Matt Morgan Mar 13, 2011

To test it out try to start the car in neutral. If it starts there try giving the shifter a good shove into park and hold it into park and try starting. It should start in these 2 positions only. If it starts in any other position on the shifter the switch is out of adjustment.

  • h3artagram0 Mar 13, 2011

thank you im going to have to see if that works

  • Matt Morgan Mar 13, 2011

Ok. If it helps, leave me some feedback please. :-)

  • h3artagram0 Mar 13, 2011

    it only starts in neutral

  • Matt Morgan Mar 13, 2011

Sounds like the "park" part of the switch needs adjusting. It's not recognizing its in park and won't let the starter turn the engine over.

  • h3artagram0 Mar 14, 2011

where do you ajust this and how do you know if it needs ajusting? when i actually get the car started the starter starts right up

  • Matt Morgan Mar 14, 2011

As I stated earlier, the starter should only work in the "park" and "neutral" positions. I know it needs adjusting because you said it WILL start in the neutral position but NOT START in the park position, or in any of the other positions. I do not feel there is anything wrong with the startinc circuit of your car as the car will start in neutral as it should. There is a switch somewhere on the shifter mount (if the shifter is on the console) or on the steering column that only makes contact when the shifter is in the park or neutral position. It is adjustable. You will need to gain access to the shifter assembly(if in the center console, remove the console). You should see there how the shifter operates.. if you have to, set the parking brake and turn the ignition to run and depress the brake pedal so you can work the shifter thru its motions. When you put it back up to park, you should see a switch with a wire connected to it make contact with the shifter in some fashion.. you would adjust this switch so it makes its contact slightly earlier...moving the switch closer to the shifter usually. This will then let the vehicle start properly when it is in the park position. Then double check the test I gave you earlier about starting in anything but park or neutral. There is also another switch for the reverse lights and. It is only activated in reverse position and this is not the switch we are looking to adjust.

It is definately a electrical issue somewhere and those problems are hard to detect without getting it scoped by a professional mechanic.

My dodge stratus 2001 runs then it will stop what could be wrong

There is limited information in your description. I would only be able to guess at this point it may be the fuel pump.
How long does it run before stopping?
When you say stop you are refering to the engine going off - right?
Was the car parked/stored for a long time?
Is this evertine you start it or only at certain times, e.g. cold morning, after a long drive re start.
Does it make any specific sound before it shuts off?
Do any of the dash lights come on just before it stops?
Does it re start again just after it has stopped - and how hard is it to restart?
When was it last refueld compared to when the problem started?
Was anything done to the car just before it started to show these symtoms

MY 2001 DODGE STRATUS WILL START AND RUN UNTIL THW ENGINE IS WARM THEN SPUTTER AND THEN DIES. WHAT IS WRONG?

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter of a dying fuel pump. Start with the fuel filter, they are usually less than 20 bucks and pretty easy to change. If it persists, check into changing the fuel pump. Good luck.

2001 Dodge Stratus SE MIL light on problem

sometimes you cant trust those dummy lights, i would keep driving it or have your car parked and turned off and turn you key on to aux. and turn off and the turn on aux again, and the ck engine light will blink count the blinks and spaces and the car will give you a code and if there is something wrong, then the code is were you want to start, look on line for the code or get a 2001 dodge stratus manual that will tell you as well and then go from there

98 Dodge Stratus won't start

Best place to start is with "check engine light". Put vehicle in park, foot on brake, and cycle key on, off, on, off, on, then wait with pen & paper ready to read flashes of check engine lamp. Will be a 2 digit code each time. For example, flash, short pause & flash, will be 11, or flash, flash, short pause, flash, flash would be 22. In between trouble codes you'll get a little longer pause, then it will start to flash again if more than one code, which is quite possible. Also note that I say key to on, not start, just on.(normal run position) Then get back to us and we'll be able to better help you.
