First check coolant level while cold...Check radiator first thing in morning before starting and coolant reservoir white plastic tank..Be sure radiator is at top but dont overfill, also the reservoir should be about halfway at full cold level.check all over for any leaks whether it is low or not .Check air filter while you are there..There is a chance it could be the engine cooling fan which also has a fuse/relay.You can raise the hood and run the engine while watching the fan to make sure it comes on at operating temp (125--150)..Also it should come on when you engage the air conditioning system..If it doesnt come on the fan is bad....It is designed to come on when it reaches a certain temp....automatically..Also comes directly on when A/C is turned on
Most commonly it will be a stuck thermostat...You can tell if the hoses are swollen tight when hot or if it is boiling in reservoir...If it has never been flushed it could be a clogged heater core...It really depends on past maintenance...If you carefully check each of these you should find your problem.
Heater hoses connect core at firewall 2 smaller 5/8 hoses ...Remove both while cold after draining half of coolant use garden hose and flush through The pressure will release clogs in some cases but if it is too bad you will have to replace........Also a water pump will sometimes fail internally...It is only a finned wheel that will start freewheeling and not pumping at all..But that is very rare that this happens.......................I hope some of this will help.......................Metalpoet

1998 nissan maxima v6 overheating

If it overheats in the first mile, my guess would be no coolant in the system or a stuck thermostat.

Car overheats then engine dies going down hill coasting. When try to start, starter spins as if no gas or fire to the plugs. Can this be a sensor flipped by too much heat or lack of coolant ? If so, how do you reset the sensor ?
