My 2001 ford escape has developed a humming sound coming from the front tires. It seems to quieten when I steer left. The bearings seem tight.

Most likely a wheel bearing good possibility it is the right one if it gets a little worse when you turn to the right then its probably the right side wheel bearing, they tend to get louder under load. Also slight chance it could be a bad tire.Howie

It can only be one of two things, tires out of balance or a blown strut. rotate tires and verify that the tires are not the cause, if still have vibration replace struts.

Hearing growling whine sound from passenger side front. Growling produces fast vibration (not shimmy). Sound increases on left hand turns. Sound more pronounced below 60 mph.

You need to replace your wheel bearing. Ford Escape bearings usually need changed around 80,000+ miles from my experience.
