SOURCE: Replacing struts on 2004 Ford Explorer

Unbolt the struts at the top and bottom, and remove. Should take about an hour per side. You may need to get a bigger pry bar, but you are on the right track.

I'm trying to remove rear struts on 05 Explorer. One of the 3 nuts on top of the strut has what appears to be a bump stop. I'm having trouble getting a wrench or socket on this nut to remove it. ...

Get a 13mm ratchetting wrench. It's the only thing that will work. I think the part you are talkin about is the peice that is held to the top of the strut mount by two of the nuts that hold the strut on. I will add that the removal and install of the new strut will also require the removal of the lower control arm to knuckle bolt and the removal of the stabilizer link. This will allow you to leverage the lower control arm low enough to get the strut assembly in and out.

How do you install front struts on a 2004 ford

Did you install the old spring and top bearing plate on the new strut, just as you had when you removed it? Hopefully you removed the entire assy. You needed to use a strut compressor or spring compressors, if you like to live dangerously,to remove the old strut from the spring.

Doeds a 1997 ford explorer have front shocks or struts?

My 1997 Ford Explorer AWD has shocks in the front.

Also, if yours has shocks, be certain you get replacement shocks for AWD/4WD and not 2WD versions. They are not the same; the 2WD shocks have a longer body/shorter rod that will rub on the drive shaft--at least until they are sufficient bent/dented to clear the shaft (at which time they may not be working so well any longer, having leaked...) ;-)
