Question about 2000 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

My 2000 Jeep Cherokee sport won't start. The battery is fine, the starter has been tested, there is power to the starter, there is no draw on the battery when the key is turned. You can here the fuel pump when you turn the key. The jeep doesn't turn over at all.

I would recommend that you check the starter relay. It is not uncommon for these to go out. It is an easy fix, and does not cost a lot either.

I would tend to agree its very possible you have a bad starter. You could remove it and have it tested. Most of your local auto parts stores do this for free.

The 1996 jeep cherokee sport has been running fine. The last couple of days if I start it and drive for a bit turn it off and then come back out to start wont start....I leave it for a bit and then...

This is a common symptom called heat soak. The heat from the exhaust system is so overwhelming on the internals of the starter, that it creates infinite electrical resistance inside the starter solenoid, basically killing it until it cools down.

You have two options. You can replace the starter, or you can wrap your starter with "Header Wrap" to help prevent this problem.

If you have power to the small trigger lead on the starter when you turn the key to the on position, problem could be the starter or the starter solenoid. If there is no power there check the starter relay and relay connections. Could also be the ignition switch itself.
Only test after the battery is verified as good, terminals are clean and both ends of battery main wires are checked for tightness.

When i took my jeep to the emission test it pass but as soon as i got home and try to start my jeep it didn't start but the radio and lights are still working what could be the problem with it.

Probably unrelated to inspection. Have you tried re-setting the security system (usually locking the drivers door or the rear hatch using the key, then unlocking also with the key will do that). I'd also clean the battery terminals. A dirty connection will allow enough current flow to run low-draw items such as radio and lights but the connection will break down when loaded by the starter which draws far more amperage than any other item in the system.
If neither of the above work, check the starter relay in the power distribution center and the starter itself, to make sure that voltage is getting to where it needs to be when starting. If you need to go that far and don't know how, ask and I'll give you that info!

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee sport and it just won't turn over. It has full power inside and a brand new battery.

You need to begin testing at the battery using a volt meter. Power requirement of interior is far lower than the starter needs. Check battery for 12v, check that posts & terminals are clean and secure, Check starter relay in the power distribution center, make sure grounds are good at the engine end. Check for 12v at the starter main terminal and 12v at the starter trigger wire with the key in the start position. (if you have both, likely starter has failed,) if power only at main terminal, re-check relay, and also test neutral safety switch and ignition switch. If no power at main terminal go back to the battery and re-test everything between again.

Jeep 1997 cherokee sport sometimes starts sometimes not

!st check the battery. If u can drive it to a parts store they can check your charging system (battery + alternator), If they check out ok, then the starter should be removed and tested (most parts stores do all this testing for free).

Have you had battery load tested? That's a good place to start, then we need to check for a current draw, if that checks out good.
