Question about 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

3 Answers

I am experiencing serious exhaust smell (similar to rotten eggs) on a 1991 Chevy 5.7 liter 1500 (Silverado). Also, the floorboard on the passenger side gets very, very warm (almost hot to the touch) on any kind of distance trip I take. Obviously, the exhaust pipe runs down the right side under the truck. Can the TBI injectors wear out, as in too many miles (445,000 )? I have used injector cleaner for years, including Sea Foam recently. Could a professional throttle body cleaning (never had one) help the problem? I have read that the rotten egg smell could be coming from excess gasoline burning in the exhaust system.

I agree with the Cat being clogged.. The exhaust not getting out is whats making it run rich. Its under the passenger floorboard.

Sounds like a clogged catalytic converter that needs to be replaced.

When you say smell like exhaust, does it smell like rotten eggs (sulfur)? If so, could be catalytic converter clogged up.

I have a 99 chevy lumina 3.1 engine it starts up great but it smell of fumes from exhaust pipes after a while it cuts off

The problem you describe is almost certainly a bad/stopped-up catalytic converter. Not fuel line, not trunk seals, not head gasket or anything else. The fuel line answer is just wrong. If your catalytic converter is bad or stopped up, you will also almost certainly need to replace the Oxygen sensor as well.

You didn't say it smells like rotten eggs or sulfur, but that is the most commonly-stated description...it isn't accurate; a bad converter smells like a bad converter. Most people find the odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur. A clogged exhaust system will shut an engine off after a short time due to backpressure and excessive temperature buildup.

Your check engine light should also be on. Read any diagnostic codes the PCM has set. I'm fairly sure your problem is the catalytic converter...

Smells like rotten eggs

it is happen to old engine because the oil that escape from the engine(engine cover near the exhaust) when it is got hot it sends bad smell but after how many minutes if it already dried up because of heat it will gone (like frying using the used cooking oil in pan there is a different smell).

Car runs ok, but gets hot and rotten egg smell comes out of the exhaust

If car runs okay with egg smell, its normal and working the way it should, if car is running poorly and the rotten egg smell has gotten worse, its a sign that your exhaust catalytic converter will need to be replaced. good luck!

My 2002 Pontiac GP V6 smells like rotten eggs from the exhaust

The rotten egg smell if it is coming from the exhaust is a very good sign that you catalytic converter has failed or is failing. but a bad or battery that is being overcharged can also make a rotten egg like smell.

On my 2006 chevy silverado 1500 i hear squeaking when i start the truck idleing but it goes away and also the smell of rotten eggs for a few minutes...what can this be?...and how can I fix it?...-Joshua

Joshua,
check to see if you have a loose belt, either the alternator belt, power steering belt or water pump belt,,, if loose - adjust to the proper tension.
also, check to make sure you do have power steering fluid in the power steering pump,, but since you said that the sound goes away then I would say that it is in fact a belt issue.

Your catalytic converter is plugged up,  If you check the exhaust output at the tailpipe you will find it restricted.

2001 chevy silverado engine ''sputters'' and is losing power-

Backpressure is the result of any obstruction in exhaust flow. Both the converter and muffler create a certain amount of backpressure by design. If the cat becomes plugged, exhaust cannot properly escape and can cause an extreme lack of power. (Engine can't draw in what it can't expell out the other end) Usually the rotten egg smell is also accompanied by a "wheezing" sound in the cat as well.
