an easier way to get by this which GM dealers dont want to tell you. Take the shroud off your steering wheel. Make sure you pull the fuse under the hood for your air bag.

You will see either a three or 4 tiny wire connector going to your ignition. Turn your key to the on position, cut the "yellow" wire and you shouldn't have anymore problems with antitheft.

Theft light flashes car wont stay running

You need to bring it to the DEALER...

1997 Does not allow Self Programming over the 4 Hour Period. Since you do not have an Original Key that will work (you swapped out an Operating System). The DEALER must go into the Computer and RELEARN the KEY.

Make sure you bring ALL YOUR NEW KEYS and do them ALL at once...

This is a pretty common problem on GM cars in general. Go to this link, there are a couple of quick fixes you can try and some more permanent solutions if that doesnt work.

The security light on the dash stays on when i drive and i haven't been able to start the car a couple times.the manuel says that it's a fuse if the light remains lit while driving. It's part of a theft...

it's more than likely the key itself they have chips in them and when they wear down the sensor in the ignition isn't getting the proper signal and hesitating therefore causing the light to come on, go to chevy and give them the vin # they should be able to cut you a new kiey with the chip in it but beware some times these things can run from 60 - 100 bucks just for a key

Can anti-theft be reset.Lite on car won't start

Try to start car. When it fails leave the key in the on position. You will see the Theft System light flashing. Light will flash for 10 minutes, stay on and then go off. Turn key to off position, wait 10 seconds and start your car.

Don't waste your time or money taking this problem to a dealership because Chevy refuses to issue a recall on this problem. I went to the dealership 5 times. I wound up paying for 2 key cylinders, a BCM module, an ECM module. I finally took it in when the theft system light came on while driving. The problem was in the fuse & relay center underneath the hood. It was all corroded so it was replaced. No problems since then.

The theft system is set on my 1997 chevy cavalier help

If it is a pass lock system just turn the key to the on position, but do not start the engine and wait 10 minutes until the light stops flashing. Then turn it off and restart it. It should go away. If the light is not flashing in the first place then I don't know.

1997 pontiac won't stay on

i had the same prob. w my 97 grand am. i bought a new ignition switch and installed it...after installing you have to reset the theft system. all you have to do to reset is turn the key far enough for it to bump the motor over then leave the key in the run position for about ten to twenty minutes...might hook bat. to charger cause if it dies in process you have to start all over...the theft light will either blink then stay on or go out completly....
