Water is lost two ways.. leaks in the nomal routing of the cooling system.. and leaks into the piston or intake.. where it then goes out the tail pipe.. sometimes in the form of vapor... even small drips.

It probably leaks more at a certain operating temp then others.. drive time etc can affect the rate of loss.. but like any water leak.. it never gets better... only worse.

The garage should have done two things.. check the cooling system for leaks.. and check engine compression. Sounds like they did both.. if the head gasket has a small leak again it will only get worse over time.

If you are not finding water under the car.. or inside the car (heater core leak).. and you don't smell anti freeze.. chances are it's the head gasket.

The trick in finding a leak you can't see is taking it someplace that has the proper equipment.
A "block tester" should be used as well as a standard pressure tester.. there are many places coolant can leak.. hose connections, water pump, heater core, intake manifold gasket, head gasket and even a cracked block.

If they are detecting water in the oil.. or when you remove the oil fill cap and see a yellowish foam or the oil looks odd on your dipstick.. you probably have water in the oil.. confirming a head gaset leak or worse.

Have it retested (pressure and block tester) at a reliable shop.. or ask the fellows who made the first diagnosis how they arrived at it.. in other words.. what test(s) did they do.. inpsect the oil.. pressure test.. block tester etc etc.

Best of luck

Torque settings on a fiat uno 1100 engine

Answer barbo(fiat mechanic) Fiat do not issue torque settings for a punto they use angles so that you can snap your stretch bolts! after contacting fiat and haynes neither of them would give proper torque settings, so i delved into my many tech manuals on fiat fire engines which is what is in your punto and i have successfully changed many fiat punto head gaskets using the following torque settings: stage 1 starting from the centre head bolts tighten to 33nm: stage 2:65nm and finally stage 3: 96nm these torque settings work fine and will probably save you buying new head bolts.

I have a punto 52 plate that makes a water bubbling noise when started (like water tank) it goes off after a couple of seconds. The car drives fine and the fan will automatically come on as if the engine...

Hi! I had that problem along with a few others a couple of years ago and was told different things by different garages! ended up spending a fortune fixing things that werent broken! anyway, it was the cylinder head gasket that had gone.
Mine was fine while driving fast as the air from outside was cooling the engine, but as soon as i started driving slowly, was stuck in traffic or stationary with the engine running, the needle for the temperature would rise quickly and the fans would come on. Eventually, after sitting in traffic one day, the engine totally over-heated and smoke started belching out the bonnet! lol! So, I would get it fixed asap if I were you! Think mine cost around £120 for a replacement, but shop around- I got quoted more than double that some places! Hope that helps!

I have a punto 55 M reg

10\40 oil ,before changing oil put an engine flush in the engine, then change oil and filter.the noise sounds like noisy tappets, the oil leak unlikely to be head gasket unless u are losing water

If the head gasket is starting to go, the the water gets vapourized inside the engine. The water level will go down, sometimes you get white smoke from the exhaust, the car consumes more fuel and has less compression and performances.

If you are lucky, and you check the water you can drive a car with bad head gasket for many miles, before it blows completely and leave you on the middle of a motorway.

If the head gasket is starting to go better to fix it or to replace the car.

The part costs only thirty pounds or so here in UK, but the job is expensive, as you need to take apart the head.
Here in UK you dont pay less than four hundreds pounds, probably a bit more, depending on the garage.
