Question about 2001 Ford Taurus
You most likely have a faulty stop light switch. I have provided you with a couple of pictures. The first one in black and white is where you will find the switch and the second one is a picture of what your switch should look like but may not be what is in the car but you will get the idea. What happens is when you press the brake pedal a little button on the switch opens and when it opens it completes an electrical circuit and turns the brake lights on. when you let off the brake pedal the pedal comes back up and pushes that button back in to close the circuit. it is most likeley stuck open and not pushing back in when the pedal goes back up. When you see it you will understand better. I hope this helps you and good luck.

There is a small button above your brake pedal that when you press the brakes it moves away from the button causing the button to come out and your brake lights to come on. What happens is the button is mounted on a bracket under the dash and with time or accident hitting it with your foot the bracket can get bent back away from the brake pedal causing the brake pedal to not push the button in when its not applied This is what causes your brake lights to be on all the time. Most of the time you can get under the dash and bend it back a bit so it pushes the button back in when the brakes are not applied.
