Relieving Fuel System Pressure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid possible fuel discharge if an accidental attempt is made to start the engine.
  2. Loosen the fuel filler cap to relieve tank vapor pressure.
  3. Connect a suitable fuel gauge to the fuel pressure connection. Wrap a shop towel around the fitting while connecting the gauge to avoid spillage.
  4. Install the bleed hose into an approved container and open the valve to bleed the system pressure. Fuel connections are now safe for servicing.
  5. Drain any fuel remaining in the gauge into an approved container.

Fuel gauge

Hi,
What is the actual issue? If the fuel gauge is not working it could be the fuel sender, which may be in the fuel tank, and likely NOT an easy fix - unfortunately.

The fuse location will be listed in the Owner's Manual or dowload it HERE. http://www.vadengmpp.com/owners-manual/pontiac/1999-Pontiac-Montana.pdf

The fuel problem is most likely related to insufficient fuel pressure due to a defective fuel pump. The fuel pump is mounted inside the fuel tank and will require the fuel tank to be removed. It may be best to have a shop perform this repair, it is not an easy job.

2003 pontiac montana running out of gas at half tank after fuel pump replacement

The fuel pump/tank sending unit may not be assembled or installed correctly.

If the fuel pick up portion is not positioned properly, it will not reach the bottom of the tank.

If the sending unit is faulty, you will not know the correct volume of fuel in the tank(misreading).

Take it apart and check these items.
