Tough to say. The lifter making the noise could be allowing oil pressure to escape. Or it may be dry for oil because oil is not getting to it.
You may have to take the lifters out to see if it is a lifter problem or lack of oil.

Hi Christo.
If you hear a tappet noise when the engine is started, and it goes away after a few seconds, if is not a very serious problem. What is happening is that you have Hydraulic lifters that maintain they're adjustment when the motor is not running. One of the lifters is collapsing. When you start the engine it pumps back up and works. Since lifters are at the top of the engine, you should that you use. It is called "Sea Foam". It is an excellent product to ad to the oil. It helps keep the engine cleaner and removes any moisture from the oil. It is great with hydraulic lifters.
Just so you know the difference. If you have a sticking lifter, you will have a constant tapping sound. I have used Sea Foam to un-stick lifters successfully.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A WORD ABOUT THE REPLACMENT OF THE KIA RIO TIMING BELT
.

It is recommend that the belt be changed at 60,000 miles.
I also recommend that the dealer do it.
If the car is under warranty you must tell the dealer to replace it. If you do not tell them to replace it, THEY WILL NOT.
If the belt breaks, it will DESTROY the engine.
Hope this is helpful to you. Happy New Year
Greetings, Mark

Golf e mk4 is noisey sounds like tappets, but various mechanics reckon that it is hydraulic cylinder shims? car has done 66k and not been looked after, just had it serviced and still noisey. it needs a...

BAD LIFTERS WILL MAKE A NOISE.IF VALVE LIFTERS AND LOWER SPRING SEALS BEEN REPLACED AND LIFTERS STILL NOISEY.EITHER ENGINE OIL TOO THICK OR ENGINE NEED OIL CHANGE + FILTER CHANGE.DIRTY OIL CAUSE LIFTER NOISE OR OIL PASSAGES IN THE CYLINDER HEAD STOPPED UP NOT ALLOWING LIFTERS TO GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF OIL.OR OIL PRESSURE TO LOW DUE TO FAULTY OIL PUMP.OIL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 29 PSI @2000 RPM. TRYING ADDING SOME SEAFOAM CLEANER IN CRANK CASE IF OIL PASSAGES STOPPED UP IT WILL CLEAN OUT OIL SLUDGE.GO TO AUTO PARTS STORE TELL THEM YOU NEED SEAFOAM.AFTER 500 MILES YOU NEED TO CHANGE OIL AND FILTER AGAIN. SEE IF THIS HELP BEFORE SPENDING ALOT OF MONEY .

CHANGE OIL AND OIL FILTER.IF OIL IS DIRTY.DIRT GET TRAP INSIDE THE LIFTER.CAUSES THEM TO BE NOISEY.IF OIL FILTER AND OIL HAS BEEN CHANGE.HAVE AT LEAST $2500.00 .FIRST GET A PRICE CHECK TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE. NOW WHEN YOU REPLACE LIFTERS.THE CAM HAS TO REPLACED ALSO. THE LABOR RATE.IT WILL TAKE 4 TO 5 HRS.TO REPLACE.YOU HAVE TO TAKE ALL FRONT DRIVE BELT COMPONENTS OFF THE TIMING COVER OFF TO GET TO THE CAM SHAFT.THEN YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE WHOLE INTAKE OFF TO GET TO LIFTERS.NO TELLING HOW MUCH CAM AND LIFTERS GOING TO COST.

06 Suzuki Forenza make a loud clicking noise.

sounds like it just needs a oil & filter change ?
check engine oil level!
smell it to see if its burnt
or is dirty [tarnished or black]
or gritty between your fingers?
it could be noisy tappets or lifters!
change your mechanic as its got absolutely nothing to do with the belts!
im truly amazed at the amount of rip offs in the auto industry in the US!
Cheers Rob.

How do I check to see if the timing belt is broken or loose?

IF you can see any lifters through the oil filler hole in the valve cover - then try this..

Turn the engine over.. Look in the hole while its turning.. If you see no lifter action or nothing moving while the engine is turning over - then the timing belt is bad..

If you see lifter movement - then the timing belt is functioning..

Hope this helps !!
rate me good ;o)

Hydraulic lifters

Yes, but there is still a lot of stuff to move out of the way to get in there and pull them. I would try all the chemical remedies for sticky lash adjusters (oil flush, marvel's mystery oil, etc.) first, then check the timing belt to see if a worn timing belt has let it slip a tooth and the valve timing is off for that reason before digging into the lifters. There used to be a forum that had video and audio from a subaru legacy this model before and after swapping out a bad lifter. Google for it and see if the noise matches.

Timing belt broke. Open the oil fill cap and crank, if you don't see the valve lifters moving, then the timing belt has definately broken.

well check and make sure that it's getting fuel by checking fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel pump relay, then also check to make sure that it is getting spark,by checking your coil, cap and rotor, and plug wires..then also check your timing belt you can check to make sure your timing belt is fine by taking off the oil cap and making sure that your lifters are all move also nown as your top end..

Crank shaft movement

did you check the pulley on the crank shaft ??
is it warped ?? ( bent )
because i do not think that the truck will run with the crankshaft moving.....back and forth.
so in any case you have a lot of work to do.
here is how to remove the crank shaft.
REMOVAL
  1. Remove the oil pan.
  2. Remove the oil pump from the rear main bearing cap.
  3. Remove the vibration damper.
  4. Remove the timing chain cover.
  5. Identify bearing caps before removal. Remove bearing caps and bearings one at a time.
  6. Lift the crankshaft out of the block.
  7. Remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seals.
  8. Remove and discard the front crankshaft oil seal.
INSTALLATION
  1. Lightly oil the new upper seal lips with engine oil.
  2. Install the new upper rear bearing oil seal with the white paint facing towards the rear of the engine.
  3. Position the crankshaft into the cylinder block.
  4. Lightly oil the new lower seal lips with engine oil.
  5. Install the new lower rear bearing oil seal into the bearing cap with the white paint facing towards the rear of the engine.
    1. Apply 5 mm (0.20 inch) drop of Loctite 518, or equivalent, on each side of the rear main bearing cap. DO NOT over apply sealant or allow the sealant to contact the rubber seal. Assemble bearing cap to cylinder block immediately after sealant application.
    2. lb align the bearing cap, use cap slot, alignment dowel and cap bolts. DO NOT remove excess material after assembly. DO NOT strike rear cap more than 2 times for proper engagement.
    3. Clean and oil all cap bolts. Install all main bearing caps. Install all cap bolts and alternately tighten to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) torque.
    4. Install oil pump.
    5. Install the timing chain cover.
    6. Install the vibration damper.
      1. Apply Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant, or equivalent, at bearing cap to block joint to provide cap to block and oil pan sealing. Apply enough sealant until a small amount is squeezed out. Withdraw nozzle and wipe excess sealant off the oil pan seal groove.
      2. Install new front crankshaft oil seal.
      3. Immediately install the oil Dan.
if you have an email address i can send some images
