I've had this once. The run contact on the ignition switch is shot, but the ignition contact in the start position is still good. Replace the ignition switch.

I thought about the possibility of the engine having such poor performance that it could not run without help from the starter, but the fact that it worked for an hour with a new ignition switch implies that is not the case.

Check the run contact on the ignition switch (any of them, particularly the new one you installed on the old steering column) with an ohmmeter (vehicle battery disconnected!) when you have the key in the run position. If it is open, then you probably have another fault that is burning up the switch contact. Usually such a problem will fry the fusible link in the ignition circuit before the switch is damaged, but perhaps somebody defeated that protection by replacing the fusible link with an over-sized piece of wire.

The fault could be a wire in the ignition circuit with bad insulation shorting to ground or one of the components connected to the ignition circuit. It is unlikely to be one of the latter since that would usually cause a noticeable problem with engine performance (unless it is a "kill the engine" intermittent short).

Did the Check Engine light come on before the engine quit? What codes are stored in the computer? These may be a clue.

1990 Ford F150 wont stay running, replce ECT and ICM ... still wont run. Water coming out of exhaust after trying to run. 5.0 w/5-speed.

Very possible bad head gasket and fowled out plugs and/or O2 sensors. Remove spark plugs and check condition of them and pull O2 sensor to see if it is green from antifreeze. Good luck.

If you turn the key to acc, nothing happens, if you turn it to on, nothing happens, but if you turn it all the way to start, it does star but when the key springs back like normal, it turns the truck off....

did you replace the switch or did you replace the ingnition cylinder (cylinder is the part the key goes in)the switch is what controls the start acc and keeps the car or truck running

1990 F150 Fuel pump just replaced but wont turn on

Replace the fuel pump relay. And if your truck has dual tanks there's three fuel pumps, one in each tank and another secondary fuel pump.

My 90 Ranger did that when I put in a cheap relay. It's under the fuse block under the hood.

I had the same problem with My 1990 F150 300 6cylinder 4x4.....I cahnged all the same things you did, finally I sprayed a can of Gumout through the throttle body and it worked and ran great. Now I add fuel injector cleaner to the gas and a regular clean with the gumout and the problem has'nt come back. Good Luck to you and hope it works!
