Question about BMW 328

1 Answer

I have to remove my starter. Can it be accessed from underneath or do I have to take half the engine apart to get to it? Is there any special tools that I may need to remove the starter ( i.e. torx or socket?)? thank you in advance for your help.

Starters usually can be accessed from underneath. starters are mounted with bolts and are attached to the power cables with nuts, so, all you need is a wrench/socket set. some starrters are soldered to the power, but this is rare, and i dont believe bmw does this, but soldering irons are only $15 and are easy to learn, anyway... you dont have to tighten the mounting bolts to a specific torque, but dont overdo it when you tighten it, cause starters can occasionally be aluminum...

How to replace the starter

Disconnect negative cable from battery. Jack up front of vehicle and support vehicle with suitable jack stands. From underneath vehicle , starter will be visible on passenger side of engine at rear of engine near where the transmission is attached. If cables and wiring are accessible, use appropriate wrench or ratchet with a socket to remove the cable and wires (notice what terminals on the starter are associated with color and size of wiring that you are taking off) The wiring and cables need to go back on the new starter in the same location and position to insure proper operation and prevent from grounding out on anything.

If wiring is not accessible with starter still bolted to engine, remove the two large bolts the are securing the starter to the engine. Slowly lower starter down to access the wiring and remove wiring. Starter will be approx. 20 -30 lbs so be aware of the weight of the starter.

Once starter is removed, install the new starter in reverse procedure of removal. Reconnect the negative battery cable and attempt to start engine.

Hope this helped, and good luck.

How do i change my oil pan on my 2000 ford crown victoria. There seems to be a welded in crossmember holding the engine underneath do i have to remove the motor mounts and raise the engine to do the oil...

Yes you will have to raise the engine, also, and remove some other items that can be damaged when lifting. An engine hoist will be needed for this job. This text was taken from a 2000 crown vic workshop manual.
see pic for torque sequence. i could not locate a torque spec, so you will have to hand feel them. if it is a rubberized gasket do not over tighten as it will crush the gasket.

Hope this helps!

How to remove oil pan

I see a lot of posts like this, with almost no information at all. Every car is different, so without knowing the make/ model/ engine you're asking about, it's impossible for anyone to help you with this. On some cars, you have to remove part of the exhaust system. Some require removal of other parts as well. Some require special tools the average joe isn't likely to own. Try reposting this again with a bit more info please.

I have 1990 Lexus LS400. How is to remove starter from engine?

Although the LS 400 is a great car, the engineering could have been a little more "consumer oriented," when it comes to repairs.
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the starter is in the middle of the engine, underneath the intake manifold. This means you must remove the negative battery cable, empty the coolant, remove the air intake assembly, the throttle body, all of the vacuum lines, hoses etc. and then the intake manifold. The starter is located under the intake.
If you are a "back yard" mechanic, you can do this yourself. It's not very dificult, just extremely tedious. It also doesn't require any special tools, just the basics, such as a metric ratchet set and open end wrenches. It would take a pro about 5 hours.
Good Luck!

Replacing 2004 PT Cruiser Starter

He can do it. Tell him to just be patient (everything is a tight fit in a PT) and remember to disconnect the battery first. No special tools are required. He may have to move a bracket or two for access. It lives on the left side (front) of the motor and easiest to get to from underneath.
