Question about 1998 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

1998 Cadillac Deville low fuel warning message and chime even when tank is full. It is intermittent. On the digital display, the fuel indicator says "F" (full), but if you carefully watch it while driing, it suddenly jumps to "E" and the message and chime goes off. Could it be the fuel level sensor in the Tank? The chime is very annoying...if the cost is too great, I may just disable chime if I can find it.

Thank You. My mother's car is a DeVille and unfortunately, there is no tank access from the trunk. It looks like I have to drop the exhaust out of the way, then the Gas tank. I only have floor jacks and jack stands, so even though I am comfortable doing most work on a car, this may be beyond my capabilities.

Hi, yes the fuel level sensor is the likely culprit. Rather than disconnecting the chime, you may want to replace the sending unit. The reason is it is likely to get worse over time, and eventually the sender will fail to read the proper fuel level. You can get a new sending unit for about $100. Unfortunately, the labor is a bit expensive as the tank must be removed to replace the sender, unless your model allows access through the trunk. My manual does not say whether your car provides access or not--it only says to check for access by removing the spare tire. Look there to see if there is a door to the bottom of the car. If there is, the procedure is much easier. Basically, you just disconnect everything from the fuel pump assembly, turn the lock ring (there is a special tool, but I use a couple of screwdrivers for this) to unseal the pump from the tank, and lift out the pump with the sending unit. Replace the sender on the pump and reinstall. Do this when the tank is less than 3/4 full. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using Fixya.

well, few of us have a hydraulic lift in our garage. I actually have the same problem with my car and dread fixing it, only because I will have to crawl under. That said, with the jack stands fully extended, the access isn't too bad. I would wait for the tank to be near empty. I use a creeper to move around from bolt to bolt. I put a full set of tools at arm's reach so I don't have to keep getting out and in. You can actually do this in a few hours. Other than the cam ring that holds the pump in, there is nothing particularly difficult about the job.

Car will not start driver information center message displays SERVICE FUEL SYSTEM could this problem because of low fuel level.

Yes. Some of the newer vehicles would presurize the tank, unless there is a minimun of gas in the tank. This is a safety system that is inline to keep you from burning up your fuel pump. Now as far as the minimum lvl, that varies a little by manufactor.

'02 Rendevous beeping randomly, no lights or trouble indicatiors on. Beeps when parked, beeps while driving, no rhyme or reason apparant. sometimes goes 10 or 15 minutes without beeping, other times beeps...

The audible warnings alert the driver of a system concern or a critical vehicle condition. The radio generates the audible warnings through the left front speaker. The radio receives audible warning requests via the class 2 serial data line from the IPC or body control module (BCM). If the radio receives multiple audible warning requests, the warning with the highest priority sounds first. The following lists the audible warning priority and the pulse rate:
Fast rate chime--200 pulses per minute
Medium rate chime--150 pulses per minute
Slow rate chime--50 pulses per minute
Single chime

Is the sound heard different from typical Audible Warnings ?

Fasten Safety Belt Warning
The radio activates the fasten safety belt audible warning as requested by the IPC. The IPC sends a class 2 message to the radio indicating the chime frequency, slow rate and duration (5 pulses). The fasten safety belt warning sounds and the fasten safety belt indicator illuminates when the following occurs:
• The ignition switch transitions to ON.
• The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) detects that the driver's seat belt is not buckled, signal is low. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the SDM indicating the driver's seat belt status.
If the seat belt is buckled when the ignition is turned on, the chime does not sound. If the seat belt is buckled while the chime is sounding, the chime stops. If the seat belt is unbuckled after the initial transition to ON, the chime does not sound.
Headlamps On Warning
The radio activates the headlamps on warning as requested by the body control module (BCM). The BCM sends a class 2 message to the radio indicating the chime frequency, fast rate and duration, continuous. The headlamps on warning sounds when the following occurs:
• The ignition is OFF.
• The BCM determines that the driver's door is open, signal is low.
• The BCM determines that the headlamp switch is in the park or head position.
Key-In-Ignition Warning
The radio activates the key-in-ignition audible warning as requested by the BCM. The BCM sends a class 2 message to the radio indicating the chime frequency, medium rate and duration, continuous. The key-in-ignition warning sounds when the following occurs:
• The ignition switch is OFF.
• The body control module (BCM) determines that the driver's door is open, signal is low.
• The BCM determines that the key-in-ignition switch is closed, signal is low.
Turn Signal Reminder
The radio activates the turn signal warning as requested by the IPC. The IPC sends a class 2 message to the radio indicating the chime frequency, medium rate and duration, continuous. The turn signal warning sounds when the following occurs:
• The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
• The turn signal switch is in either turn position, sensing, within 1 second, an open to B+ transition in the turn signal control circuit, left or right turn.
• The vehicle has traveled a distance of 1.2 km (¾ mi) by counting pulses on the vehicle speed input circuit.
The IPC turns OFF the turn signal reminder when either the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position, or the turn signal switch returns to the OFF position, sensing, within 1 second, no transitions from open to B+ in either of the turn signal control circuits, left turn or right turn.
Additional Chimes
The following chimes will turn ON when an associated indicator/message turns ON in the IPC/DIC:
• ABS indicator
• AWD Disable indicator
• Battery/Charge indicator
• Brake indicator
• Change Engine Oil indicator
• Door Ajar indicator
• Hot Coolant Temp indicator
• Low Brake Fluid indicator
• Low Fuel indicator
• Low Oil Level indicator
• Low Oil Pressure indicator
• Low Tire Pressure indicator/reset
• Low Washer Fluid indicator
• MIL (Service Engine Soon) indicator
• Oil Life Reset
• Park Lamp Out indicator
• Rear Hatch Ajar indicator
• Service Traction System indicator
• Service Vehicle Soon indicator
• TRAC OFF indicator
For a description of an indicator refer to Indicator/Warning Message Description and Operation .
For diagnosis of an indicator refer to Symptoms - Instrument Panel, Gages and Console .

Did the Mechanic check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes in the BCM or insturment cluster ? Did you try a Buick dealer ?

Dash pannel fuel indicator lamp shows empty but tank full

This would be very common of the fuel pump and level module in the tank. The module from auto zone runs about $280. This must be purchased as a module and replaced. The tank then needs to be dropped out of the car to make this repair. Let me know if you need further instructions to complete this.

1998 Cadillac Deville low refrigerant a/c

I have a 1999 Cadillic Deville. The low Frefrigerant indicater come on after about 15 minutes of disconnecting the battery power. Each Time I reset the power the air conditioner comes back on for a while then goes out. I have taken it into the local auto repair place and they find no problem with the unit.
Could this be a intermittent connection to the computer. They have replaced both sencors and the problem persists. Where is the computer located on the car that handles this AC sensor message?
