Question about 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

While driving my 2000 cavalier the car completely shut off. when i put the key in and try to start it. it is as if the key is still in my pocket, absolutely nothing happens. the dome light, horn, headlights, brake lights all still work. but the radio and dash show no sign of life at all. i changed the battery, checked the wires to the starter, changed out the ignition switch, checked the IGN fuse and the other fuses and i am completely lost. please help me get this car started i am sure it is something simple and stupid. thank you for your time. ryan 321-662-4221

It could be almost anything - immobiliser, engine management, broken wire somewhere, a relay...

No sign of life from the dash probably indicates it isn't the immobiliser but take nothing for granted. The problem should be approached diagnostically rather than throwing parts at the car. A wiring diagram and a test lamp or voltmeter to follow the circuitry until the fault is found.

SOURCE: dash dead ,turn key to

Hi, while your ignition switch may be fine, the big red wire that goes from the ignition fuse to the switch may be bad. Did you check that wire for power when you had the switch out?

I have a 98 cavalier and i just changed the thermostat , took it for a test drive and she over heats in 1 km . fluid is up hoses are warm no heat from the heater core.

you have an air pocket you will have to berp the system, or you can get it warm and then take the radiator cap off and shut vehicle off let it cool completely down and put more water in until full. an air pocket causes the water to not circulate and it will run hot and have no heater.

My chevy cavalier 2000 has a theft system light on and it wont start

Put key in ignition, turn to on (do not start) position for exactly 10 minutes. As SOON as the light turns off, start car.

This is a problem with most gm vehicles. The vault is the computer.

Chevy cavalier z24 theft system light on

This is a easy fix. Lucky just follow the procedure and your car will start. This is a theft system shut down.
The procedure is. Disconnect battery for a minimum of 30 seconds. ( one post is OK. )
Reconnect battery and get in the car and start as usual 1 time only. When it starts and stops letthe key just return to run position as if it was running. Do not shut it off and if you do you must stert the procedure all over again. i usually put on the emergency brake before i start and that shuts of the driving lights etc.
Just leave the key in on running position and go have a coffee. it takes 15 to 20 minutes for the car to recycle the system. When you come back to the car the flashing theft light will either be off or solid.
Try to start again. If it doesn't go shut it off and turn back on and start as usual. It will start and run and stay running.
The reason you have this problem is something electronic was disconnected whe the battery was hooked up. always disconnect the battery before you touch anything electronic and you will not have this problem.
