Question about Chevrolet Tahoe

2 Answers

Our 2001 Tahoe has had an intermittent problem with the headlights not coming on at night. Is there a sensor somewhere that might be dead or dying? We tried last night the option of hitting the dimmer switch to turn off the function but to no avail. Help! JH

You'll have a fuse labeled HDLP, check it.
My suggestion... check the ignition harness under your dash. Make sure it's not loose as this would cause the same problemOur 2001 Tahoe has had - dcramer531_1.png
The dimmer switch in the steering column can cause this as well. you will have to pull the covers off from around the tilt and check the plug-in for the dimmerswitch and it is a little of a bear to get to. You also have the little brown domed sensor in the top of the dash that looks for light to turn these on, it can be that as well. I am going to read a little and see if there is a bullitin on this.

In case they were accidently tirned off, you can turn them back on.

When necessary, you may turn off the automatic headlamp system and the DRL feature by following these steps:

    1. Turn the ignition to RUN.

    2. Press the DOME OVERRIDE button four times within six seconds. After the fourth press of the button, a chime will sound informing you the system is off. The system will revert back to the automatic mode when the ignition is turned off and on again.

    3. To return to the automatic mode, push the DOME OVERRIDE button four times within six seconds (the chime will sound), or turn the ignition off and on again.

You can find more information in your Owner's Manual on page 2-55.

I didn't find any bullitins on the light sensor nor did I see where it has been troublesome. try cleaning it with mild soapy water and don't cover it with anything like a ball cap.

That being said let me explain the system quickly, an ambient light sensor is used to monitor outside lighting conditions. The ambient light sensor provides a voltage signal that will vary between 0.2 and 4.9 volts depending on outside lighting conditions. The body control module (BCM) monitors the ambient light sensor signal circuit to determine if outside lighting conditions are correct for either daytime running lights (DRL) or automatic lamp control (ALC) when the headlamp switch is in the AUTO position. In daylight conditions the BCM will command the DRLs ON. During low light conditions the BCM will command the headlamps ON. Any function or condition that turns on the headlamps will cancel DRL operation.

Because all of these functions are controlled through the BCM body control moudle, it is entirely possible that the BCM is faulty and causing your DRL's and head lights to malfunction.

It is a fairly simple system, but they can be difficult to diagnose.

Lets try this again. Tahoe battery was dead for 24 hours. We jumped it off, ran fine for a 10-15 minute drive. Got home, it sat for 4-5 hours and had to run an errand. Tahoe fired right up, put it in...

Check engine light come on ? You should have some testing done ! Fuel pressure an flow testing , Scan tool data checked . Charging system , battery , connections , cables . What data does scan tool show for mass air flow sensor , what are the fuel trims at ? If you don't know what these are you need to take it to a qualified repair shop .

My 2001 tahoe dies while idling in park. After waiting over night it started and ran fine until allowed to idle in park for a short time. This a 2001 Chevy Tahoe with a 5.3 liter engine and 160,000 miles.

If the only problem is idle and it runs grat above ide then the most likely component is the Idle Air Control valve. This is providing you have no codes stored indicating something else.

Tahoe abs and brake light intermittently stay on

When you start to loose your abs sensors(more than one)the brake light will come on.with one sensor going the abs light will come on.I would have your front wheel bearings check seen as how that is were the sensors are.If a weeering sound happens while driving and increases and decreases with with speed I would definatly suspect wheel bearings.

Driver info center sometimes slow to display

The computer BCM and PCM and sensors are responsible for readout.... Check your car battery and charging system first. Computers work on voltage data and senor input. Low or unsteady voltage can effect input and output information and the computers timely control of several automobile functions. It can be problematic at night as headlights pull alot of voltage.
