SOURCE: i cannot get the gear to shift down

check the brake lights, the shifter has a safety feature that will not allow u to shift out of park if your foot is not on the brake and the brake lights are working, if the brake lights are working there is a bypass to get it out of park under a little cover next to the shift handle.

SOURCE: 2006 Chevy Impala stuck in park

When you turn ignition on it releases a cable that is attached to the shifter also the shifter has a solenoid attached to it that is released when you step on the brake. Both times that I had the problem of button stuck and cant shift out of park the solenoid was sticking and wouldnt release .

10591.jpg In the event of an electrical failure, the vehicle can be shifted out of PARK by using the following procedure.
1. Turn the key to the ACC or ON position. 2. Remove the liner to the cubby bin to the right side of the shifter. 3. Depress the BTSI override (2) on the side of the shifter assembly (1). 4. While the override is depressed, move the shifter out of the PARK position. 5. Return the cubby bin liner to its original location.

SOURCE: charger won't shift out of park ...park lock

http://www.custombilletstore.com/product_p/1028.htm I know this is late but I had the same problem. The release wouldn't work either. I had to remove the shifter and take the cover off. A spring broke off the pink lever in the front of the shifter. The shifter would move side to side but couldn't be pulled back. The above link sells a replacement part that might work. Thanks to petevpi.

I cant get my shifter to move out of park, i just replaced my ignition lock cylinder could it be some type of theft prevention?

They might. The shift interlock solenoid is controlled by the brake light switch. When the brake pedal is depressed the switch sends a signal to the interlock solenoid attached to the shifter assembly to allow it to release. Check to see if the brake lights are operational. If not, suspect a problem with the brake light switch. If brake lights are working, possible wiring to shift interlock solenoid or solenoid itself causing the problem. Your vehicle may be equipped with an interlock release button located close to the shifter to allow it to come out of park that can be depressed to release the shifter. Owners manual may provide more information on this procedure

Brake Shift Interlock Actuator - Floor Shift Removal and Installation
NOTE: The brake shift interlock actuator is not serviced individually. If replacement is required, install a new floor shift selector lever assembly.
For additional information, refer to Selector Lever - Floor Shift in this section.
Brake Shift Interlock Actuator - Column Shift Removal and Installation
  1. Set the parking brake.
  1. Remove the steering column shrouds.
  1. Turn the ignition to the accessory position and apply the brake or actuate the brake shift interlock actuator (BSIA) override.
  1. Put the selector lever into the NEUTRAL position.
  1. Disconnect the BSIA electrical connector.
  1. Remove the BSIA screw.
  1. Gently pry the clip up and remove the BSIA.
  1. NOTE: During installation, verify that the BSIA override has been activated and the slider is fully rearward. Before rotating the selector lever from NEUTRAL into PARK, align the selector lever tab into the BSIA. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

check make sure brake lights working if not check brake fuse if fuse good you have a faulty brake light switch which allows when you press on brake pedal the brake transmission shift interlock solenoid will allow shift transmission in to out of park.also check brake transmission shift interlock solenoid fuse and transmission neutral safety switch.

Hi I have a 2006 Dodge Charger SE with 67,000 miles on it.. I got in my car to head to wrk and my gear shift will not move out of park. I tired it several times still will not move. I pulled up my skirt...

SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION BRAKE INTERLOCK SOLENOID IS NOT ENERGIZING.MAKE SURE BRAKE LIGHTS COMING ON WHEN YOU APPLY BRAKE PEDAL.SEE IF BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH MALFUNCTION OR BRAKE LIGHT FUSE BLOWN. THE TRANSMISSION BRAKE INTERLOCK SOLENOID WONT ENERGIZE, WHICH WILL KEEP YOU FROM GETTING CAR OUT OF PARK.MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 12.6 VOLTS AT BATTERY.DEAD BATTERY YOU WONT BE ABLE TO GET CAR OUT OF PARK.CHECK TRANSMISSION BRAKE INTERLOCK SOLENOID FUSE AND CHECK TO MAKE SURE BRAKE LIGHT FUSE IS GOOD AND BRAKE LIGHT FUSE NOT BLOWED.

Can't get out Park, starts ok, tried the manuel thing pressing
the pink release button, nothing. Had the car towed but
they had to hoist it on a truck. Was there a recall for this?

2000 Taurus starts just fine. Transmission stuck in park. Cannot shift. I do have foot on brakes.

When you push on the brake pedal with the ignition key in the run position, do you here or feel a clicking noise at the shifter?

There are also (2) fuses in the interior fuse box ( #17 and #32) that must be checked to make sure they are not blown. If the fuses are good, I would suspect either the brake switch or shift interlock solenoid.

The fuse supplies ignition voltage to the brake switch, when the brake is applied, the switch closes and voltage travels to the shift interlock solenoid. The solenoid is activated and the shift lever is unlocked.

So, it may be one of several things causing the problem.
1) blown fuse.
2) brake switch defective
3) shift inter lock solenoid defective.
4) wiring harness or connector problem.

it is your interlock solenoid or switch on your brake pedal. This keeps you from starting your car in anything but park.
