SOURCE: automatic transmission slipping

if it is slipping and the trans fluid level is within specs then the forward clutch pack in the trans is worn out and you need an overhaul.

SOURCE: I need to add an additive to the automatic transmission. I cannot see the dipstick. Someone said there may not be one - transmission may be sealed. I'd rather not change all the fluid.

there has to be a dipstick somewhere on that transmission

SOURCE: what is the best transmission fluid to put in a 93

i would use what the factory recommends you can find the fluid type stamped on your transmisson fill stick as far as additives i would recommend lucas transmission additive but be warned that if fluid is real dirty or has not been changed in a long time that with alot of miles changing trans fluid in high mile vehicles can start transmission to start slipping.

1999 Ford Taurus transmission fluid about 4 inches above full mark

Even overheated transmission fluid would not expand this much. If too much fluid has been put in, it can begin to foam. You haven't mentioned any indication of air bubbles on the stick. It won't shift because you have too much fluid.

Too much fluid can damage the seals, yielding leaks. None of this is good news. Here is advice:

Location and access to Transmission Filter to change Trans. oil and Filter

Hi Lb,
My car is RX300 1999 and has the same problem. I changed the fluid 2 years ago after the trans slip and lost the shift. Afterwards it worked for another 2 years. But recently it doesn't work again even I change fluid and put Stop Slip additive to the trans. I was told the trans has to be rebuilt. So changing fluid and filter can help to maintain the trans for sure and can prevent problem. But if the trans has already worn a lot, it can't help at last.

I have Isuzu trooper 98 was runing good , now don't wan to rung becouse look like the transmission Is no good ? Wen I put the reverse , won't want to work , is been set with out drove , for like

May need a new tranny but I would try new fluid and filter change and one of the good additives. What is mileage? If it was shifting good before it sat unused for so long fluid and cleaning additive probably do the trick. When was last time fluid changed

2004 dodge stratus over 110,000 bought used. When putting car in reverse occasionally it hesitates to go. Also the car shuts off once in awhile if put in reverse. Is the tranny going?

I does sound like a transmission issue, how old is the fluid?

Also, even if changed recently, was it given the specified fluid or the the shop fill it with universal fluid and just add a modifier? These transmissions are very picky, you should always use the actual ATF +4 and NEVER use the universal + an additive no matter what the oil change place says (bring your own).

If you do not know how old the fluid is or if it has the correct type, charge the fluid and filter, you might get lucky.

Hope this helps.

1989? When was the last time the Transmission was drained and new Transmission Fluid (oil) put in?
This Fluid (oil) loses viscosity and get particles in it causing additional loss in viscosity. I would go to even having the transmission drained and FLUSHED (cleaned) and new Fluid (oil) put in. Recheck the operation.
Boyles and Charles Laws are applicable here: (P*V)/T. Heat causes the Fluid to Heat and Expand (in molecules) but because of the limited sealed volume (transmission case) this increases Pressure allowing the smoother shifting and placement into gears.
Change the Transmission Fluid (oil) and have the Transmission Flushed (cleaning the insides) and your problem should go away.

Transmission trouble

If unit has been neglected, my first thought is serves you right! Maintaining this stuff is essential.
That being said, change the fluid and filter. Use a container of Lucas transmission additive, along with the new oil. Do not expect a miracle. If it does help, change the fluid again in about two weeks. You don't have to drop pan if it has a drain plug when changing the second time. Put additive in on both changes! Likely you have a bad varnish buildup on the insides of the valve body.. you must be a really good tech to take one apart to clean it, so do not even think about it!!! Most shops do not advise changing fluid on neglected units but, if it already is malfunctioning you have everything to gain and nothing to loose at this point!
Good luck
