Question about 1993 Saturn SL2

2 Answers

Got in my 2000 Saturn sl2 after going in to get my son. Got in the car started. Made a terrible bucking noise and hesitated to go in reverse but when it did it bucked the whole car and then on the way home bucked while shifting off and on. Never had one problem before. Does this mean I need a new transmission. Only have 66000 miles on it.

Thanks James for taking the time to answer. First off let me tell you how fortunate I am that I have a shop that looked at my car and didn't charge me anything for letting me know it was the transmission. Then the recommended me to another great place called Barts Transmissions up the street.

The problem was , this is exactly what he put on the ticket

Replace lock nut on main shaft .....

Remove side cover on transmission, replace self locking nton on main shaft. Nut came lose.

It was $320.00. Now I don't know if that is a great deal or not but when I was thinking no matter what it was going to be anywhere from $700.00 to a rebuilt tranny, that sounded great to me. It only has 66,000 miles on it so I was just sick over it. But I wanted you to know in case this came along again. There was another post I read in here in the s series where some lady had the same exact problem and she said she had to buy a rebuilt tranny...just makes you wonder ya know.

    Thanks again

I had a same problem for my 2001 Saturn SL2. I took it to dealer yesterday. They replaced valve body and cost about $1,000.

This car is known to have a couple problems with the automatic transmission. One possibility is that the differential pin has come loose and his hitting on the inside of the transmission. This requires an overhaul, however it doesn't sound like your problem. This transmission is also known for having the valve body in the transmission wear out and cause erratic shifting. This could be your problem. It is still a fairly expensive repair, but does not require the transmission to be removed or overhauled. Hope this helps.

This is a pretty common problem on GM cars. Expensive to fix, and even harder to diagnose. Read this info found on this link. It will help you understand the problem and offers some good solutions to beat this yourself. Bypassing this terrible system is a lot better than trying to have it fixed. Instead of paying the dealer mechanic to stumble thru the system and charge you for unwanted items, do this yourself.

96 saturn sl2 auto shifting hard

Potentially bad news; when ours started getting quirky, delaying before engaging, it finally lost reverse too.
~$4000 from a Saturn shop or $3000 for independent. After good referrals, we used the independent and the tranny held for 27,000 miles until the engine blew at 56,700 miles; it dropped a rod cap. I 'sold' it to my son for $1. The worst car I have ever owned and my first US car in 35 years- it is also my LAST.

My 1997 SL2 saturn driver window won't roll down. it's electric and it doesn't make any noise. what do i need to do to fix it?

get a new power window regulator for 90 bucks on ebay, pay a glass shop to install it. it is an electric motor and did 10 years service, you can afford to replace it every decade. i have replaced 3 on a 99SW so consider yourself lucky.

No reverse but all gear going forward

Just to let you know that I just got my care back from the tranny shop. I had not had a problem at all and just the other night after picking up my son , got in my car and it hesitated to go in reverse but it and it bucked real hard twice. Did a little of the same ..but anyway...the tranny place has to replace the lock nut on the main shaft. Remove side cover of transmission, replace self loking nut on main shaft ..nut came lose ...$320.00 So I was very happy I didn't have to have a valve job, sylenoids replaced or rebuilt tranny.
