You are going to have to post more info, if the oil is definitely trans oil bearing in mind the Power steering uses the same colour fluid. Hello, There are some products which as additives will renew the seals if they are dry. You need someone to look under your car to try to determine where the leak is coming from.
There is a part called a "Rack and Pinion" which has the moving pistons that push the front wheels to turn. Sometimes the seals on the ends of this device wear out. Or you could just have a loose clamp on the power steering hose. Keep monitoring your fluid level as the pump will fail without adequate fluid.
This would be a part that a front-end alignment shop would inspect to do a front-end alignment.
he filled the PS fluid? it was low? If so it has a leak somewhere, usually the high pressure line. the rattle could be anything, have the front end and steering linkage checked. tie rods, sway bar links, ect.
Check your brake fluid level in the master reservoir. Normally the fluid is a light straw colour but when in the presence of mist air becomes very much darker. If this is brake fluid it is a matter of real safety to find out where the leak is and get it fixed urgently.
Next to your front left light you will find a small plastic filling rod like an oil check rod but totally black. You just have to unscrew it slightly and you can check the Low or Full (L and F indicators) level of your PSO.
Coming to what to put in it. Mk1's accept both ATF oil (Automatic Transmission Fluid - Red colour) and Power steering Fluid (PSF - Green colour). Mixing them is also no specific issue but not recommended.
Please check the hose under the recipient you fill in as it can often be cracked after winter periods.

Unfortunately Discoveries will always eventually leak some fluid, People who say theirs do not leak have just not found the problem yet. I just traded a 2003 for a new vehicle. First the power steering can and does leak but since the fluid capacity is not that much, if you have a continous leak and the power steering still works it is probably not the leak you need to address. also the plastic splash guard makes it difficult to identify leaks easily. My 2003 discovery was leaking for a while the leak was from the auto trans cooler. Check the leak colour, white paper under car, red fluid will be the trans fluid, The power steering fluid in the car is a special fluid (not trans fluid) if the correct fluid would be a greenish colour. Other than this oil leaks can be plentiful.
